Description / Luna Lettuce Seeds
Luna, an iceberg lettuce, has large heads that mature quickly and have a short core. The medium green leaves are very shiny and show good tolerance to tip burn. Luna is a compact plant that makes the most of small-space gardens. Slow to bolt and well adapted to early spring and fall plantings, Luna lettuce supplies two harvests: one before summer heat settles on the season and another before the winter cold kicks in.
A Lactuca sativa variety, commonly called lettuce, Luna is a member of the chicory (Asteraceae) family. The leafy green plant also offers ornamental value and works well in an edible landscape. Luna lettuce can be grown in a mixed container or window box.
As a cool-season, semi-hardy vegetable, Luna lettuce is one of the earliest crops to sow in spring. Lettuce thrives in cold temperatures, germinating and growing well in conditions as low as 28 to 32°F. A light frost can even enhance its sweetness. Lettuce grows easily when planted in a sunny to partly sunny location with fertile, organically rich, medium moist, well-tilled soil that drains freely. However, consistent water is required for seeds to germinate. For a steady harvest, consider succession planting every 2 to 3 weeks.
