All-America Selections (AAS) Ornamental Winner 2025

Nasturtium Baby Yellow is the newest member of the popular Baby series of nasturtiums. Introduced in 2024, this annual immediately won a prestigious AAS award. Highly floriferous, the petite plant grows to a mature size of approximately 12 inches tall and holds its blooms upright, with less flopping. Set against a backdrop of lush dark green foliage, masses of flowers add bursts of sunny yellow color to the garden summer through fall, typically to first frost. The flowers and leaves are edible, having a mild, spicy flavor; and the peppery seedpods can be used similarly to capers or dried and ground for use as a culinary spice.

A Tropaeolum minus variety, commonly called nasturtium, Baby Yellow has a compact, rounded, bushy habit that's ideal for small-space garden beds and containers. But it looks its best when massed or grouped and in optimal conditions, the plant will self-seed.

Easy to grow and tolerant of neglect, nasturtium grows best in a sunny to partially sunny spot with average to dry, slightly acidic (6.5 to 7.5 pH), well-drained soils. They grow well in poor soil and tolerate dry soil, but excess nitrogen in the soil will result in more leaves and fewer flowers. They grow best in mild climates with sunny, cool summers; so, in hot climates, some shade may be beneficial, especially in the afternoon. Baby Yellow nasturtium is tolerant of drought, heat, cold, rain, and wind; and deer tend to leave them alone. Nasturtiums are suitable for herb and vegetable gardens as they offer pest control in an organic garden, repelling some harmful insects, such as aphids, and running interference for some pests, like slugs and flea beetles, attracting them away from vulnerable crops.

Direct sow nasturtium seeds in spring approximately one week after the last frost or start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date, gradually acclimatize to outdoor conditions, and transplant after all threat of frost has passed.
