Description / Hakonechloa 'All Gold'
We all love Golden Hakone Grass, its bright foliage adding a bit of dazzle to any shady spot. Sometimes, however, this perennial can become prostrate after several seasons, almost flattening out. That's where All Gold comes in -- with a more vigorous, sturdy, upright habit and even brighter gold shades! For nonstop color that refuses to tire out at season's edge, rely on all Gold!
Reaching 14 inches high and a bit wider in most climates, All Gold thrives even in deep shade, where few other plants are happy. It leafs out vigorously in spring, keeping its color and upright habit even through the humid days of summer. In autumn, russet bloomspikes top the plant -- attractive to some, pruning subjects to others, but irresistible to birds in any setting. As frost arrives, the foliage loses its luster but not its habit, and may be kept as is on the plant all winter or trimmed back before the hard prune in early spring. And that's about it for maintenance, folks!
All Gold is an excellent border subject, and is absolutely showstopping as a ribbon of glitering gold in the foundation, street island, or along the driveway. Use it in woodland gardens, too -- it is unpalatable to deer, so it will survive those midnight critter raids!
A great improvement over the old favorite 'Aureole,' All Gold brings Golden Hakone Grass to a new level of garden performance. Use it freely in the landscape. A slow grower, it eventually colonizes into great drifts. Invest in this legacy garden plant today! Zones 5-9.
