Description / Peas 'N' Pod Bernard Shelling Pea Seeds
Days to Maturity: 65 to 70 from transplant
A unique petite English shelling pea, and member of the Peas 'N' Pod series, Bernard is a seed vegetable that is perfect for small home gardens. It grows as a uniform hedge with afila vines, which stick together like Velcro, keeping the plant upright and the pods up off the ground. This shelling pea sets beautiful white flowers at first bloom followed by small 2- to 2½-inch uniform pods (1 to 2 per node), each packed with 5 to 6 sugary sweet peas. If you haven't tasted peas fresh out of the garden, you really haven't tasted peas at all.
A Pisum sativum variety, commonly called garden pea, Peas 'N' Pod Bernard is a member of the legume family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae). A hardy annual plant, it grows vigorously, forming a tendril-bearing vine; but unlike typical garden peas, its compact habit requires no support. It uses space efficiently, making it a great option for small gardens, decorative raised beds, and patio pots. It even fits in a flower box.
Easy to grow from seed, Bernard peas grow best in sunny locations with rich, moist, freely draining soil. A nitrogen-fixing plant, peas naturally improve the soil in which they are planted by taking nitrogen from the air and converting it into a usable form in the soil.
