San Joaquin, an F1 hybrid jalapeno pepper, is grown as a fruit vegetable. The bushy plant sets thick-walled, crack-resistant, 4-inch, green to red fruits with great taste and mild heat, rating 2500 to 6000 units on the Scoville scale.
Typically grown as an annual, San Joaquin is an herbaceous, frost-tender, short-lived evergreen perennial and is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which typically grow in temperate to tropical regions. This jalapeno pepper grows rapidly, forming a compact, upright, bushy plant, about 30 inches tall, a nice size for a container. Although it produces a heavy yield (approx. 50 fruits per plant) all at one time, the peppers hold well on the plant. They will eventually turn red but are still delicious.
Easy to grow, jalapeno pepper grows best in a sunny location with fertile, organically rich, moist but well-drained soil having a pH of 6.5, but it is adaptable to a wide range of soils. It is a low-maintenance plant; however, pinching back young plants encourages bushiness.
A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, sweet pepper seeds can be direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed. For an earlier harvest, seeds can be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting. Flowers begin to set fruit with night temperatures between 55° and 75°F. Protect plants with row covers if temperatures are expected to dip below 50°F. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature as well as to maintain soil moisture and control weeds.
If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
