Description / Sagina Irish Moss
Sagina Irish Moss, a perennial evergreen ground cover, flawlessly impersonates moss, yet it's a blooming plant. This appealing plant, beloved by gardeners for years, forms a thick, verdant carpet of creeping stems adorned with soft clusters of emerald-green leaves. Throughout the growing season, delicate white flowers emerge from tiny green buds, followed by brown seed capsules.
A variety of Sagina subulata, also known as heath pearlwort, or awl-leaf pearlwort, Sagina Irish Moss is an herbaceous plant that grows at a moderate rate, spreads endlessly, and is capable of self-seeding under ideal conditions. Despite its delicate appearance, this tough plant withstands light foot traffic and is particularly striking when planted around cobblestones, between pavers, or along garden walkways. It can even replace a lawn in smaller areas. This versatile plant also adds a vibrant splash of color and texture to mixed containers.
Irish moss stands up to cold temperatures and requires little maintenance. It thrives in sunny to partly shady spots with consistently moist, well-drained soil. It may appreciate some afternoon shade in warmer climates. This plant is generally free from pests and diseases, making it a durable and attractive addition to your garden.
