Description / Punica 'Sochi' Dwarf Pomegranate
Punica 'Sochi' Dwarf Pomegranate, a compact deciduous shrub, hails from the southern regions of Russia. This plant boasts slender branches adorned with glossy green leaves and vibrant orange-red flowers that bloom from summer through early fall. While the plant does produce small, bright orange-red pomegranates, please note that these are NOT EDIBLE and are purely ornamental.
As a variety of the Punica granatum or pomegranate, the 'Sochi' Dwarf is a versatile addition to your garden. This multistemmed shrub can serve as a striking accent or specimen and be trained as an espalier. This dwarf variant makes an excellent bonsai specimen as well. In the garden, expect rapid growth, with the plant reaching up to 4 feet in height. However, it can be pruned to maintain your preferred size and shape. For those in colder climates, the plant can be grown as a container plant and conveniently moved to a sheltered location during winter.
Pomegranate grows easily and thrives in regions with cool winters and long, hot, dry summers. It flourishes in coastal or inland climates, preferring sunny, sheltered spots with organically rich, well-draining soil. However, this plant can adapt to a variety of soil conditions and can withstand drought once established. For optimal growth, consider a nitrogen-based fertilizer in the spring and an annual application of compost or well-rotted manure. Rest assured, 'Sochi' is resistant to pests and diseases.
One of the advantages of pomegranates is their self-fertility, meaning they can bear fruit without the need for pollen from other varieties. Expect the 'Sochi' to start bearing fruit 1 to 2 years after planting.
We ship this pomegranate tree at the ideal planting time based on your growing zone. Please note that we do not ship this product in December or January. The plant will be between 18-36" in height when shipped.
