Description / Prunus 'Nanking Cherry'
Prunes tomentosa is commonly known as downy cherry because of its downy leaves, stems, and fruits! It is a dense, deciduous shrub that grows and spreads. The dark green leaves make a great backdrop for the light pink to white flowers that bloom in early spring. The flowers are followed by ruby red fruits that ripen during the summer. The fruits are even edible and can range from being tart to sweet. The fruit can even be used in pies, jams, or jellies. You won't be the only one who loves the berries, birds will flock to the them as well! They do best in moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and established plants have good drought tolerance. This showy shrub has a medium growth rate of approximately 13-24 inches per year until maturity. Wherever you put it you'll surely be delighted!
