Description / Trillium erectum Red
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Trillium erectum, commonly called red trillium or red wake robin, is a stunning native wildflower growing to 12 to 18 inches tall. In spring, its unbranched stems produce a whorl of three ovate leaves topped with nodding, deep purple flowers. Berry-like fruits follow, drawing songbirds and adding interest to woodland landscapes.
This hardy, rhizomatous perennial (Zones 3-9) spreads slowly, forming clumps that can thrive for decades when undisturbed. Red trillium is an excellent choice for naturalizing under trees or in shaded gardens, pairing beautifully with ferns and other woodland plants. Thriving in slightly acidic, well-draining soil, it requires regular watering but tolerates drier conditions once established. Easy to care for, this wildflower enhances any native garden.
Plant red trillium roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart and burying them 2 inches deep. Native plants like red trillium promote biodiversity and help reduce the need for pesticides and fertilizers, making them a sustainable and beautiful garden choice. Unfortunately, wild red trillium populations are now endangered, but you can contribute to their preservation by adding them to your garden. Our nursery-grown plants are exclusively propagated commercially and never taken from their natural habitats.
