Here it is, the new king of the sandwich slicer tomatoes. Mater Sandwich is a giant, slightly flattened deep red tomato that lies across a piece of bread perfectly, tempting you with bits of bright red showing on all four sides. It stays together well too, even after the first few bites, so you get its juicy meaty flavor in every bite.
These huge fruits weigh 10 to 16 ounces, and arise very heavily on vining plants that keep producing all summer long. Stake the plant to support the heavy fruit, and offer additional bolstering as needed to let the tomatoes reach their full size. This is the prize tomato of the garden, the one guests gasp over, exclaiming, "What are you feeding those things, anyway?" Of course, our non-GMO seed gets this plant off to a great start, but its natural vigor and over-the-top production rates do the rest.
Start seeds for this tomato indoors about 5 to 7 weeks before the last scheduled frost in your area. Transplant them into the garden when all danger of frost is past and the soil is beginning to warm up.
