Description / Bit O' Gold Hybrid Cantaloupe Seeds
Days to Maturity: 80
Bit O' Gold sets many mini Harper-type melons on a full-sized vine. The round mini melons are tan at maturity and have a fine, open netting that climbs to the stem when melons are ripe and ready for harvest. Bit O' Gold melons have a tight cavity and firm dark orange flesh with excellent texture, a wonderful aroma, and a fantastic, sweet flavor. The melons hold well on the vine and after harvest.
A Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis variety, commonly called cantaloupe, Bit O' Gold is a member of the cucumber (Cucurbitaceae) family. The plant grows as a climbing or spreading tendrilled vine that typically grows 6 to 9 feet high with a 1- to 3-foot spread. The vine is typically grown on a trellis or support, but it can also be allowed to scramble along the ground, if space allows. It's perfect for growing in vertical spaces in an edible landscape. And its small flowers attract bees and other pollinators to the garden.Cantaloupe thrives under hot summer sun and performs best in loose, fertile, organically rich soil that has a slightly acid pH and drains freely. However, consistent, even moisture is required for best results. If temperatures are expected to dip below 50°F, protect plants with row covers. Mulch around plants to moderate soil temperature, maintain soil moisture, and control weeds.
