Description / Acer 'Red Dragon' Weeping Japanese Maple
'Red Dragon' is a weeping laceleaf Japanese maple that truly brings the WOW factor. This compact, slow-growing tree reaches about 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over a decade, making it ideal for adding striking color and texture to smaller gardens. Named for its unique leaf shape, where the bottom lobes resemble dragon horns, 'Red Dragon' leafs out in early spring with dark maroon to burgundy foliage that holds its rich color all season, even through hot summers. The feathery leaves have an orange-red reverse that catches the light, giving the tree a glowing effect. Come autumn, 'Red Dragon' turns a vibrant scarlet red, creating a spectacular display.
This Acer palmatum var. dissectum cultivar, commonly known as Japanese maple, has a low-spreading, cascading habit that's perfect as a specimen or focal point in containers on patios and decks. 'Red Dragon' also shines in landscape settings, especially as an understory tree in dappled sunlight. It makes an eye-catching accent in conifer gardens, where its lacy red leaves contrast beautifully with deep green foliage, particularly in spring.
Despite its delicate appearance, 'Red Dragon' is a hardy, easy-care tree. It thrives in sunny to partly shaded areas with rich, well-draining soil. While it tolerates some heat, afternoon shade can be helpful in warmer climates, particularly in Zone 9. Mulching keeps its roots cool, and feeding with Espoma Organic® Tree-tone® Fruit and Shade Tree Food during the growing season supports healthy growth. Pruning is rarely needed, but any shaping should be done in late fall or midwinter.
