How to Care for Cilantro Plant Seeds

  • Sunlight: Cilantro thrives in full sun, but in hotter climates, it benefits from some afternoon shade. Choose a sunny spot to encourage lush leaf growth.
  • Soil: Plant cilantro in well-draining soil, rich in organic matter. Cilantro prefers soil with a pH level between 6.2 and 6.8. Add compost or aged manure to improve soil quality before planting.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent leaf rot—water at the base of the plant instead.
  • Harvesting: Begin harvesting cilantro leaves when the plant is 4-6 inches tall. Pinch off outer leaves first, allowing new growth to flourish. For coriander seeds, let the plant flower and dry out before collecting seeds.
  • Temperature: Cilantro grows best in cooler weather, between 50-85°F. If temperatures rise, it may bolt (flower and go to seed). To prevent bolting, plant cilantro in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest.
