Illinois Planting Zones & Schedule

Illinois’s USDA growing zones range from Zone 5 in the north to Zone 7 in the south, offering a mix of cool and moderate growing conditions. Northern areas, including cities like Rockford and Chicago, fall into Zone 5, where shorter growing seasons favor hardy crops such as carrots, lettuce, and peas.

Moving south through the state, the climate becomes milder. Central Illinois transitions into Zone 6, and the southern region falls into Zone 7, allowing for a longer growing season ideal for tomatoes, peppers, and squash.
