Michigan Planting Zones & Schedule

Michigan’s USDA growing zones range from Zone 4 to Zone 6, depending on where you are in the state. The northern part of the Lower Peninsula and most of the Upper Peninsula fall in Zones 4 to 5, where warm-season crops should be started early indoors as seeds.

In the Lower Peninsula, most of the state south of Saginaw falls into Zone 6, where you can grow cool-season vegetables like carrots, broccoli, and leafy greens.

  • *Keep in mind that frost can occur before or after these dates. Watch your local weather to determine the best time to plant.

  • The growing season in Michigan averages about 140 days but may be higher around the Great Lakes. Refer to the planting schedules below to determine the best timing for your zone.
