Encompassing the upper Midwest, the northern Rockies, and the northernmost parts of New England, Zone 4 is a cool climate zone. With a last frost date in early to mid-May and first frost date of mid-to-late September, the average growing season lasts up to four months.
The very cold winters in Zone 4 are characterized by deep freezes, making for a relatively short growing season. However, warm daytime temperatures throughout summer make this zone suitable for a variety of crops.
The growing season in Zone 4 offers an average of 100 to 120 frost-free days. Cool-season crops can be direct-sown in spring while warm-season crops should be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Refer to the planting schedule below to determine the proper timing to start seeds, direct sow, and transplant seedlings.
