Description / Alibi Cucumber Seeds

Days to Maturity: 52 to 55

For my time and money, there is no finer cucumber for making sweet gherkins than Alibi. The fruit is absolutely delectable, with a good texture that holds up well for pickling, a perfect shape, and huge yields on space-saving plants.

This fruit reaches 4 inches long if you let it, but it will be more tender and succulent if you pick it much smaller (at about the size of your pinkie). It arises on very compact vines that take up less space in the garden. North Carolina State University performed extensive garden trials on Alibi and found that it scored very well for yields and for various measures of fruit quality. This is a top-notch cuke you won't want to miss.

Direct sow seeds in a sunny spot after all danger of frost is past, or start indoors and transplant when the first true leaf appears. Cucumbers can be allowed to grow on the ground, but for longer, straighter fruit and to save garden space, grow them in a cage or on a trellis, allowing 1 foot between plants. Keep them well watered, and keep the fruits picked promptly.

Easy to grow, versatile, high yielding 0 people found this helpful

Growing Alibi since 2020 and loving it! I've been on the fence about growing cucumbers as I've never had a cucumber plant successfully survive to fruiting time. Well, Alibi has proven to be a great therapy against the perceived "black thumb" and a joy to grow and eat. Pros: First, it has a very consistent germination, so I finally stopped over planting it last year. Second, it puts up quite a disease resistance, especially if you provide it with trellis for support and airflow. Over the last 3 years, I haven't had a single rotting/wilting/leaf curling/powder mildew or tobacco mosaic infected plant (which can't be said about my pole beans and tomatoes). Third, it produces a very prolific successive harvest, so plant sparingly or you'll be overwhelmed with bags of cucumbers. Also, this variety is fantastic for pickling and eating fresh, eliminating the need to plant two different varieties. If harvested young, they are juicy, sweet and crunchy. Cons: Only one - spines and prickles on the vine and fruit make harvesting it a skin hazard. I wear thick gloves and rub each cucumber to remove the prickles.

super bitter 0 people found this helpful

I always grow park seed burpless and love them raw or as pickles. I wanted to try a new variety and these had good reviews. I have tried them early, medium and large. I have skinned them and eaten them with skins. They are so bitter I end up not eating them. Not sure why this is, but I definitely prefer burpless!

I allow to get about 4" and make fermented spicy garlic dill pickles. Super crunchy. Cucumber grows straight so it's easy to pack in the jars.

damping off or not germinating 0 people found this helpful

The other reviewers have had a better time of it, it seems. I started some early inside to transplant out, and all either damped off before or shortly after transplanting (most other things I have started were fine). I planted some in the ground when it warmed up, and of 5 varieties planted, it is the only one that has not come up at all. Maybe I got a bad batch of seeds. Most of the other seeds I have been planting from here have been great, with the exception of patty pan squash... those have also been unsuccessful where other varieties have grown. I still have a few seeds so will make one last attempt with them.

I live in an apartment so I only planted 2 seeds, both grew very well until we got hit with a hellishly hot day and 1 died. Grateful it did because the remaining plant has exploded absolutely everywhere and is currently loaded with flowers and lil cucumbers. Looking forward to pickling soon

Great Pickling Cuke!! 0 people found this helpful

I grew this cucumber and another variety (National Pickling) alongside it this summer (2016). I caged both and treated them the same throughout the summer (daily waterings and feedings every other week). The Alibi cukes were more uniform in shape and size (even when I missed one day's watering), while the National Pickling were slightly bulged due to the inconsistency in watering. It's the end of July, and I'm going to take a few Alibi cuttings and try to propagate them. I'm in Griffin, Georgia (40 miles south of Atlanta), and we usually have warm temperatures until the middle of November. Next year, I'll have to remember to propagate a second round of cukes about the end of June.

HUGE yields. 0 people found this helpful

Great success with Alibi 2 years in a row. I grew Alibi against the lattice panels that surround my garden. I couldn't keep up with its massive yields. Fantastic flavor whether picked tiny or full grown. I had no problem with pests or disease whatsoever. I highly recommend.
