Plant Allium Tumbleweed bulbs in fall, and in late spring to early summer, they bloom in huge, round flower heads that look like spidery tumbleweeds exploding in starry rose-purple florets. Borne on stout stems above strappy blue-green leaves, the stunning, long-lasting blooms have a mild fragrance and a stylish, modern appeal in the garden. They make chic floral displays, fresh and dried, in flower or seed form. Butterflies and bees adore them, but deer typically ignore them.
An Allium schubertii variety, commonly called tumbleweed onion, this plant is a bulbous perennial that multiplies every year and slowly naturalizes, forming dense clumps over time. It is a stunning specimen but is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in mixed beds, borders, or containers.
Bulbs are so easy to grow, they're virtually foolproof. Tumbleweed onion grows almost anywhere but performs best in sunny to partially shady locations with rich, sandy to gritty, dry to medium moist, well-draining soil. Plant at a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Once established, they are drought tolerant.
