Description / Arizona™ Sandstone Hummingbird Mint Seeds

Another fantastic color from the Arizona series of ultra-compact hummingbird mints. Less than a foot high and wide, this beautiful perennial blooms the first year from seed, offers terrific heat and drought tolerance, and sports unusual pale orange and dusty purple blooms above rich licorice-scented foliage.

Ideal for containers as well as the perennial border, Arizona Sandstone is a pollinator magnet, bringing in butterflies and bees as well as the hummingbirds that give this perennial its common name. They begin as soon as the first flowers open in midsummer—softly colored, tubular, and boasting dusty purple buds and markings on terracotta-orange blooms. There's simply no other flower like it in the garden.

Expect the flowers to keep coming into fall in most climates, held above gray-green leaves that boast a powerful, evocative licorice-mint scent. On a warm summer day, Arizona Sandstone perfumes the whole garden or patio.

Reaching just 8 to 10 inches high and wide, this anise hyssop is small enough for containers, and makes an excellent companion to unscented plants of all kinds. Its long, slender stems and tubular blooms pair well with daisy-shaped flowers from gaillardia to gazania, and its upright, arching habit is a good contrast for mounding petunias and layered geraniums. In the border or container, Arizona Sandstone shows off.

And it's so easy to grow. Start the seeds indoors, transplant when the spring soil warms up, and it will even bloom for you the first year. Arizona Sandstone loves heat, needs good soil drainage, and doesn't mind wet, cold, or even drought. Deer and other nibbling animals tend to leave it alone, thanks to the scented foliage. It's very low maintenance, and will thrive happily for years, bringing pollinators on the wing all season long. Highly recommended.

Amazing dwarf hummingbird mint 5 people found this helpful

    Rating

Bloomed like an annual growing from seed. Beautiful orange color, exactly what I was looking for. Did well for months indoors by a window and transitioned easily outdoors, never getting leggy (perhaps the dwarf habit makes this less likely?). Transplants easily and seems to tolerate container life without issue. I have an extremely hot and sunny terrace that few plants tolerate in the summer, and I was about to give up on Agastache until trying this variety - this is the only Agastache I've grown so far that is truly happy in the intense oven-like heat of my terrace.

Didn't germinate 2 people found this helpful

I bought these last year for our new property. I have tried planting them 3 different ways now with zero luck. I tried direct sow and in a pot last year, and thought I'd wait until this year to try again with sowing them as I found on the internet. The method this year was in a flat starter tray. I didn't want to give a low rating because I thought maybe I just didn't do a good enough job last year. Well, nothing this year either. I am leaving an identical review for another seed I received and had the same luck. I also got some salvia seeds that did beautifully. In fact, the plants came back in my daughters flower bed that I gave her to plant. Those will get stars.

Pretty flowers but not winter hardy 3 people found this helpful

Plants started easily from seed and looked great, but none of my plants came back in zone 6 after a mild winter. Would suggest for warmer zines.

Great Germination 3 people found this helpful

I believe every seed germinated! I have since planted the seedlings outside in the Georgia hot and humid spring weather and these little workhorses are quickly putting on size and blooming profusely. They are such a pretty little plant with unusual shape and color. I have them in beds as well as pots and all are equally doing wonderful. I plan to try out other colors next year.

Very good germination rate. Planted it this season and it is already blooming for over 3-weeks and we are in New York.

Not a single pollinator 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

Excellent germination rate. I started the plants indoors in the winter. They transplanted well. They bloomed all summer and are still blooming in early October. Not a single pollinator was seen on these. My nearby Giant Anise Hyssop was constantly covered with bees and butterflies, but not a one ever visited this variety, which is unfortunate with my limited garden space, I want every plant in my garden to attract pollinators.

Not eye catching 0 people found this helpful

I started this from seed, and it bloomed easily, but the flowers are quite small and don't make an impact, even when planted close together. I wouldn't buy these again.

Started seeds on heat mat under grow lights. Really good germination. Seeds are have been hardened off outside and ready to be planted. Very satisfied.

90% germination rate for me. Very happy with this series previously and adding more colors now with this one.
