I direct sowed 2 plants and both germinated and grew well. We got lots of squash and were pleased with the taste. We cook them like mashed potatoes (butter, milk, salt & pepper) and then eat the leftovers later like loaded mashed potatoes (cheese, sour cream, bacon). They are sooooo tasty! Then the bug pressure hit. They were the first plant that had the dreaded vine borer moths on them. Next came the cucumber beetles. I thought they were doomed so I direct sowed a third plant in another part of the garden. That was probably a mistake because not only did the original plants pull through, they thrived. The vines are at least 10' long and they are absolutely loaded with squash. The third plant stayed smaller, around 3-4', and has around a dozen squash. Not bad considering it was planted in the heat of summer. Now we have way more squash than we need - a good problem to have! Will grow these every year.

S l ooooo w to germinate. 0 people found this helpful

Ive grown these 2 years in a row. While the plants are compact, and produce well, 4 to 7 nice size squash per plant, these are very very slow to germinate and less than 50% of the seeds per pact germinated at all. Park should double the number of seeds per pack or at least cut the price per pack in half. And double the time expected for germination. This year i pre germinated in paper towels and a plast bag and the germination rate was consistantly less than 50%.
