Description / Big Blue Salvia Seeds

Here it is—the wall of nonstop color you have wanted for your sunny to lightly shaded garden bed and containers. Featuring bigger, brighter blue blooms that repeat from midsummer through fall right up to frost, Big Blue Salvia is the must-have annual of the season.

There have been other interspecific sage varieties, but not from seed. Big Blue Salvia is the first, and boy, was it ever worth waiting for. These brilliant spikes of searing blue reach about 2 to 3 feet high, and the plant is nearly 2 feet wide. Find a big generous spot and let Big Blue Salvia transform it into a butterfly haven, or use this annual in your cut flower garden for continuous spires of color that hold up well in the vase.

Another wonderful feature of Big Blue Salvia, it doesn't need deadheading. So you can enjoy these fresh spikes for months without having to shear the old blooms back first. That's a huge boon for busy gardeners.

Big Blue Salvia combines two species—S. longispicata and S. farinacea. Both are native to Mexico, with S. farinacea (Mealycup Sage) also found in the southwestern US. Together, they are far more than the sum of their parts: they offer bigger blooms, richer color, faster repeat, and more vigorous growth. It's a marriage made in heaven.

And Big Blue Salvia can tolerate dappled or light shade, unlike many salvias, without losing its bloom strength or upright habit. Big Blue Salvia loves hot, dry conditions, so it's ideal for the xeriscapic garden. All of this, for the price of a packet of seeds. Thank you, Big Blue Salvia.

Seeds arrived quickly. Planted the 10 salvia seeds indoors but only 2 sprouted. Rather disappointing.

May be perennial in Zone 8a 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Packet contained 8 seeds. Park sent me another package immediately. 5 germinated which is okay in my less-than-perfect basement "greenhouse." Long-blooming and loved by the pollinators. 4 of the 5 survived 13°, a rare low here in Zone 8a. Sturdier than S. Mystic Delights and showier than S. guaranitica, but the latter attracts more hummingbirds, is a true perennial, and multiplies rapidly. Will further test Big Blue's hardiness by setting out a few this autumn.

What a show-stopper! 0 people found this helpful

My big blue salvia is at least 4 1/2' tall not counting the spikes. I have them in back of my lemon yellow zennia profusion and they are breath taking. I will definitely but them again next year.

The seedlings I do have look nice and strong thus far--but four of the seeds didn't germinate which is quite a lot for seed this pricey!

Bee & Hummingbird Attraction 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Grew in summer 2022. Started indoors, be sure to start early. All germinated. Used heat mat and grow light. Planted near vegetable gardens to attract pollinators, but be sure to give space will get big. Great in the heat. Enjoyed seeing the hummingbirds early morning. And, best of all, the deer did not eat!!!

Slow out of the gate but lives up to its hype. I planted it in a very hot south facing situation (zone 10a). I hand watered frequently until established. After that I watered very very sparingly. It's still going strong mid-November.

I bought a packet of seeds for the first time last year. Most of them germinated and grew quickly into the most beautiful tall plants that thrived in 7a heat. I liked it so well I bought 4 more packets of seeds this year!

I love these. Consistent germination. Strong plants. They take some time to really get going and bloom but once they do they will bloom well into frost. They never fall over. They attract pollinators like crazy! Always covered in bees. They make a great backdrop.

Looking forward to 2nd year 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I transplanted these into my western Washington garden in early summer 2021. They started flowering around October and are still flowering now, in late November, in spite of the first hard frost that brought down all my dahlia foliage two weeks ago. I am hoping they will come back next year and be perennial, as they did take longer to start flowering than the other tall, blue salvia variety I transplanted at the same time. The delay in flowering is why I give 4 stars instead of 5. I do like how broad the leaves are in comparison with the other blue salvia I planted, which has quite narrow ones. Crossing my fingers that Big Blue gets even more full next year and more well established!

Big Blue monarch magnet 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Bought these seeds for 2021 and all ten germinated and drew in several monarchs at one time during peak migration and even our resident ruby throated hummingbirds as well as various bees. The show didn’t stop from July well into October even after some light frost finally hit in late October they became more vibrant. Wasn’t until a hard frost the first week of November that finally did them in. Great plants in a very sunny spot and even tolerated some shade.

Astounding blooms! 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I started the seeds indoors under grow lights and planted outside after danger of frost had passed here in zone 4b. I wasn't sure what to expect from these seeds, but what I got was an amazing show of tall, vibrant, deep blue flowers that bloomed all summer. Pollinators LOVED the blooms. I will definitely be planting these again.

Complete Monarch magnet 0 people found this helpful

Bought these Big Blue Salvia seeds for the second year in a row using the bio dome and successfully germinated a dozen plants. There are at least six monarch butterflies that are heading to Mexico (5th generation) have been enjoying the nectar from these plants and we enjoy the show and beauty along with the ruby throated hummingbirds and various bees. These plants are tall.

I planted 20 seeds of Salvia "Big Blue" 15 days ago, covered with a plastic bag, and placed in front of a heater. All but 1 seed have sprouted. 2 of the seeds that sprouted took about one week longer than the others to grow. 17 of the seedlings are healthy and already growing their first set of true leaves!

Slow but easy - Gorgeous, Impressive, Tough 0 people found this helpful

Started in seed mix under plant light on heat mat In early April. Germination 90%. Tiny and slow at first. Grew on in 4” pots. Had to hold them until mid-July. By then they should have been in 1 gallons! Grew rapidly when planted (full sun) despite less than ideal soil. Branched readily. Beautiful deep blue color, long dense spikes. Foliage is interesting, thick, grooved veins, dusky blue-green. Held up after early light frosts. Next year I hope to have them in the ground earlier.

I love these plants. The blooms are dark purple and they stand 3 feet high in my MD garden. I started the seeds in pellet plugs and transplanted them to the garden in May. They didn't start blooming until the end of July. They look fantastic with zinnias.

Excellent Tall Blue Salvia 0 people found this helpful
I bought these seeds for the first time last year and the plants were great! I usually buy a similar tall blue salvia from my local nursery and these plants were equal or better, and much cheaper because I can start as many plants as I like from seed for much less cost. As with all salvia, lots of visits from bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Not sure about the lack of need for deadheading. I usually deadhead all my salvia to encourage new flowers. Plant was excellent in a large pot!

It's BIG 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I had perfect germination. The plants are BIG, much bigger than I thought and so be sure you are giving them plenty of space, They are tough. I had them on the western side of my house and it's inhospitable and they have thrived. They don't bloom as much as I thought they would and they don't have any honeybees on them. I have a bee hive about 50 yards from the plants and I have never seen a honeybee on them.
