Description / Bishop's Children Dahlia Seeds

One of the most stunning dahlias you will ever see—let alone grow—Bishop's Children Dahlia is a warm-toned mix of solid and bicolor blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, and purple. The single and semidouble, peony-formed flowers include plenty of bicolors and two-toned blends, some gaily striped, others shading from one hue to the next like a tropical sunset, and still others a rich, deep solid color. But what makes this dahlia really extraordinary is its black foliage.

An informal, bushy plant, Bishop's Children Dahlia reaches 2½ to 3 feet tall and about a foot wide, with leaves so dark they appear black. The 3- to 4-inch blooms are held above the foliage, forming a colorful canopy atop the neat plant. Stunning in the garden and long-lasting in the vase, Bishop's Children Dahlia may become your favorite cut flower as well as a showstopper in the border and bed.

As its name suggests, Bishop's Children Dahlia is a descendant of that most famous of all dahlia, Bishop of Llandaff. Grown extensively in England (where it's one of the most popular plants of all time), Bishop of Llandaff is certainly magnificent, but we think that its "children" are even more impressive for modern gardens.

Easy to grow from seed, Bishop's Children Dahlia may be started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last anticipated frost or sown directly into the garden where it will do best in a location with full sun and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Although Bishop's Children Dahlia is a perennial, the tubers will need to be lifted in autumn, kept frost free in winter, and replanted in spring.

I bought these on a whim for the novelty. Who knew you could grow dahlias from seed? I started the seedlings indoors and hardened them off before planting out in several locations. I live in zone 8 and rarely have good luck with flowers but all survived. The one planted in a big pot did better than the ones in flower beds - filling the pot to overflowing. The dark foliage and bright orange flowers were the star of garden. Even the seed pods are beautiful. Of all the flowers I've tried (and often failed) to grow, this was my favorite by far.

I was looking forward to receiving these seeds. I opened the packet (says PKT 50) and was surprised to see that it was obviously less than 50 seeds. I counted 19 seeds as I planted a flat. I hope that they germinate and produce for me, but I would have expected more than 50 if anything.

These were the home run of the season. Started indoors in late winter and potted up while we waited for winter to end, these beauties all germinated, grew quickly, and thrived. Now it's July. I've got some in grow bags and others in the ground, and they're all blooming their heads off, well ahead of my saved tubers. A couple of them fell to insects or slugs but overall they seem pretty resistant to damage. The blooms are small (these aren't your dinner-plate dahlias) but abundant, and the plants grow to a good 2-3' height. Really really pleased. Oh, and every pollinator in the world loves them.

Excellent, easy to start & grow variety 0 people found this helpful

High germination rate, and they grow rapidly once started. Last year I started them in a group then transplanted, this year I started them individually in their own pots. Both ways worked well. Year one I had primarily reds & oranges, with a couple of yellows, and a very bright and stunning pink. Looking forward to this year's group. Highly recommended.

Facile Flowers from Seed 0 people found this helpful

These fertile seeds will germinate in days and reward you in the same season with exquisite foliage that frames abundant flowers in warm, radiant colors. Dahlias need full sun (at least in New England), rich soil, and regular watering, but you really should give these a try. Once you have them you can lift the tubers for overwintering in a cool cellar, and grow them year after year. You won’t be disappointed. If rabbits are an issue for you, you will need to protect them, but then they’re also excellent for container culture.

Lovely, easy to grow but lacking color variety 0 people found this helpful

Tried growing dahlias for the first time here in hot, humid zone 8b (Charleston SC) and was generally very pleased. Seeds germinated quickly and nearly 100%, strong growth and vigor. Lovely dark foliage. The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that all the flowers (15 plants) were either dark red and rose, and coral. I was hoping for more variety as indicated in the photo. Here in zone 8b I will not lift the tubers, should do fine, and plan to try more dahlia varieties next year. Maybe my factory mix was just off a bit on variety. Do give them a try.

A very good seed dahlia 0 people found this helpful

Good germination - twenty two seeds planted produced eleven robust plants and a few culls (since I only needed ten plants). My plants went into the ground on June 1st, and began flowering in the 2nd week, eleven weeks after planting. I ended up with a nice selection of flowers, bi-colours, yellow, light & dark orange & deep reds. The deep reds and dark oranges are rich and velvety. Foliage is all dark, and very attractive. Highly recommended.

Save the little tubers for next year, even the ones that didn't bloom. They become prolific bloomers of insane color when planted as tubers. As with all dahlias, deadhead them mercilessly at the first sign of the bloom wilting. They will thereafter bloom like crazy.

Nice intense colors against the dark foliage... 0 people found this helpful

These intense blossoms of these plants offer a nice contrast to the dark foliage. I wish we were able to post pictures here. I have mostly intense reds and salmon colored ones. But, I lost quite a few seedlings to transplant shock. (I didn't acclimate them properly to the sun after germinating them indoors). The blossoms stand up tall over the foliage. My plants are about three feet tall now (in June) and I set them outside at the end of April. I'll probably get another packet next season and grow some out to give to my friends.

Vigous plants, easy to start from seed 1 people found this helpful

I planted my seedlings into the garden the first part of May. They started growing immediately and kept growing and growing and growing. THEY NEED TO BE STAKED! It is a lot easier to tie them to the stakes as they grow. It is quite difficult to corral 4 ft tall plants that are already bent over. The stems are sturdy but a little brittle, so you need to be careful when standing the bent plants upright. The blooms are beautiful, plentiful and nicely held above the nearly black glossy foliage. This makes them easy to deadhead and cut for indoor display. It is Oct 12 and they are still blooming as we have not had a frost yet. The only down side is that I got mostly red and orange flowers. I am going to start a few more next year to try to get some other colors.

Outstanding 0 people found this helpful

This is such an incredible dahlia; the flower colors are intense and bright, the foliage is attractive (for a dahlia), and it is unbelievably easy to start from seed. I have dug the tubers in the fall and planted them the following year with great success. They may need to be staked in late summer, but are not as untidy as larger dahlias.
