Description / Black-Eyed Susan Vine Seeds

Nothing evokes a country gate or rustic mailbox as cheerily as a twining Black-Eyed Susan Vine, with masses of blooms all summer and large, lush foliage.

Managing to look very bushy but never getting out of hand, this vine is ideal for growing up through fences and gates, pillars and poles. Especially effective in containers, where its very full habit looks incredibly lush.

The 1- to 2-inch blooms arise very profusely, facing out from the vine. Petal color ranges from mid-yellow to deep orange, and many blooms feature the characteristic black eye.

If you love black-eyed Susan, you've got to see the two new color mixes fresh from our gardens. Blushing Susie is a warm-toned blend of red and rose shades, with a few pinks and apricots thrown in for good measure. Sunrise Surprise is a vintage-look mix of creamy rose, salmon, apricot, and ivory shades.

Plant this Black-Eyed Susan Vine annual in full sun. It grows rapidly from a direct-sowing, or may be started ahead. Trouble-free and very robust.

Why no blooms 15 people found this helpful

I planted my black eyed susan vine in the spring. The seeds germinated very rapidly. I strung them on a trellis and it was really very pretty. But, I did not get one bloom the whole summer. The plant looked very healthy and green. I fertilized and watered as needed. What a disappointment. I've grown them before with good results.

Received my seeds package says 25 seeds, only had 22. Started them and only15 of 22 started. Not very happy for the money spent on seeds.

Just threw the seeds into a container! 4 people found this helpful

The first year I grew these I started them inside under lights. Great germination rates (almost 100 percent). However, many of the seedlings did not survive transplanting outside, even with considerable hardening off. I grow hundreds-- if not a thousand or more flowers every year from seed. My entire kitchen becomes one big green house. Needless to say, I was disappointed. In retrospect, the outdoor soil temps may have been too cold. Last year, I followed the advice of a neighbor: patience. I waited until the outdoor temps were consistently high, and the soil had warmed to the low-60s, e.g., at the end of May during last year's cold spring. When the soil reached the 60s, I direct sowed the seeds outside in their "forever home" planters. I had to keep an eye on them until they germinated, e.g., to make sure the soil did not dry out. I also pricked out a few babies (with one set of adult leaves) that had germinated too close to each other. I moved them to still other pots. I had stunning results. The vines-- from 2 plants-- grown in one tiny planter attached to a handicap ramp, covered the entire fence of the ramp. The ramp, moreover, was in half sun and half shade. Another group of seedlings, planted together with caladiums, tumbled down from a 4-foot tall planter onto the front steps of the house. The steps, too, and in part sun and part shade. They survived the humidity better than petunias also grown from seed. Provided a nice contrast to the pink upright variegated caladium. Couldn't ask for more! Can't wait to plant again this year!

Great to crawl right up the hanging basket! 6 people found this helpful

    Rating

My trailing black-eyed Susan vines up the hanging basket become a almost green wall of privacy every August through October on my front porch. This packet of seeds will easily covered 7 to 10 containers. I didn’t lose a single transplant. I am literally obsessed with these flowers and won’t never plant another annual in a hanging basket again. They wilt (aka tell you!) when they need water and they perk right back up. They get full sun in my west facing porch but only 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight. Wish I could attach a picture of my baskets, they are literally perfect!!

We invested in a nice greenhouse with lights and heat and your seeds either didn't come up or just a few. We ended up going to lowes and buying their seeds and we have a beautiful garden from those.. We spend over $100 and are not happy.

All seeds germinated 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

All the seeds germinated and I transplanted them hanging baskets and in a wishing well I have on my front yard. I put about 5 plants in it and they have trailed out of it gorgeously. I have so far about 3 flowers but expect more. The other plants also have had about 4 to 5 flowers bloomed. I just love these!

The seeds are easy to germinate- love the constant color of the flowers - bought the seeds in white and yellow. It’s truest a happy vine in both growing on a trellis and in decorative pots.

  15. Probably 5 stars under better conditions 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I was rather fascinated by these, so I ordered up a pack. Five stars on their sproutability and growability. Only negative thing I encountered was: these pups totally fry in full sun (late spring) in short time, even with decent watering. The only ones that made it are the few I stuck as an afterthought in a well lit but protected area. BUT -- those ones took and continue to grow very well. Our Zone 5 Chicago spring was cold and rainy thru June, and on my part, I didn't really set anything until Mother's Day, so I'm not really counting on seeing anywhere near the full potential of these little guys. That's more my fault than the seeds'. I'd totally recommend these, except I'd say plant them somewhere bright, but out of the high direct total sun.
