Description / Blue Lake 274 Garden Bean Seeds

Days to Maturity: 55

Blue Lake 274, an heirloom bush bean, also called bunch beans, sets pea-shaped buds that blossom into small flowers, followed by very straight and plump dark green pods—about 5½ inches long—with tender white seeds. The flavor and texture have made this bean a classic favorite for many years, and the one by which all others are judged.

Blue Lake 274 Bean, an herbaceous tender annual, is a determinate variety, growing in a low, compact, self-supporting bush that stands erect, suitable for containers and window boxes. The prolific plant produces a huge yield that holds well, ensuring a large, one-time crop. For a continual, season-long harvest, succession plant every two weeks until about mid-August.

Easy to grow and trouble free, even for the new gardener, this shallow-rooted plant prefers a sunny location with moist, fertile, organically rich, well-drained loams. Blue Lake 274 Bean is famously well-adapted to almost any region. Self-pollinating, it will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.

A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it is best direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed.

Plants can also be started indoors and planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

Like all legumes, Blue Lake 274 is a nitrogen-fixer in the soil. After the final harvest is in, chop up the plant and work it back into the soil. You will be delighted with what it does for the quality of your soil next season.

1/2 pound seed packet (approx. 650 seeds) will sow approx. 80 feet of row.
100 seed packet will sow approx. 20 feet of row

Good green bean but beware! 1 people found this helpful

I planted a 5x10 ft bed and was not aware at time of planting that somehow pole bean seeds were mixed in this packet. I had 4 pole bean plants that that surprised me along w the mess of the vines everywhere. I could of pulled them up but managed them after I knew what they were. The blue lake remain to be my favorite.

A tough but tender bean 2 people found this helpful

These poor beans had a lot going against them, a cool, excessively wet spring, poor waterlogged soil in my new garden space, and worst of all, a newbie bean farmer. They needed a second sowing to fill in some gaps because only about 1/2 germinated in the initial run, but by that point in the summer, the weather had evened out. The ones from the first planting and (later) the second took off and produced like mad after they matured.. Even with a small row I was able to get some nice tasty beans through the rest of summer.

Still the Best 2 people found this helpful

Planted these later in the season (July 1), but they performed like champs. Germination was good, roughly 90%, and fast, within 7 days. Vigorous growth, with first bloom on 8/22. Withstood super hot summer (100+), and plants are bearing heavily. Freezing the excess, and sharing only with our favorite neighbors. ;-)

Wanted a bush bean - got a pole bean! 3 people found this helpful

    Rating

Not only were these poles beans rather than the advertized bush bean, after very sparse germination got almost no bean set. Out of 4,- 30 ft rows I only got enough beans for 7 quart. Last year, Planting the same amount of the same variety of seed, from a different company, I had enough enough beans for 48 quart. Won't be buying from Park in the future.

Not germinating 1 people found this helpful

Unfortunately only about 3 plants came up out of 40. I had to resead but used a different brand from last year and all germinated. The maxibel germinted great. Disappointed to have that with Blue lake as it is a favorite variety.
