Love the tomato. I have yet to grow one. The photo, while helpful, could use an extra photo of the tomato sliced open or a slice of the tomato shown. It could help sales…. Just sayin’…

I'd give it 4.5 if that was an option 0 people found this helpful

I did not grow the plant, but had some tomatoes to enjoy. They had excellent flavor and were beautiful--all but free of blemishes. Only one crack on four fruit in a year when cracks were common in WI. A slight amount of green shoulders, but that's an environmental issue--not the fault of the plant--and other tomatoes had them much worse. The tomatoes I had varied in size from 6 oz. to two, so smaller than I would have expected--but again, I didn't grow them. Perhaps the rest of the fruit was bigger. I would definitely recommend this tomato to anyone in the future, with the caveat that it's a hybrid, so not one to save seeds from.

Best Tomato Ever 0 people found this helpful

I just took on a chance with this variety. Started them indoors and germination was relatively quick and easy; planted them out in early May which was a little later than necessary due to travel. They were the first out of the gate (planted Black Krim, Brandywine, Pineapple and Moskovich as my other beefsteak types) to ripen in early July. These tomatoes can grow as large as 1.6 lbs in my garden and they're still delicious. This variety has a similar flavor to Black Krim but I prefer it even more - the acidity makes it the perfect slice for a sandwich, salad, cucumber/tomato salads, and just plain eating with salt. I can honestly say this is the best tomato I have ever tasted in the US. She has been healthy and overall disease resistant and handles the heat and humidity of East TN very well. This variety is still producing plentiful fruits into (almost) September. I used a cordon system for these and they did very well. I will admit I let it get a little unruly because I wanted a larger harvest ;-) Definitely a winner and now I can't wait to try the orange variety!

I chose this one based on the description. It turned out to be great. The taste is like Cherokee Purple but larger in size. It produced more tomatoes than Cherokee Purple. It is the 3rd year we are getting this. We can see large and lots of fruits on the plants now.

Low yields relative to other varieties 0 people found this helpful

I've grown this tomato for 2 years and I'm just not sold on it for my garden. I tried this variety because I wanted the flavor of an heirloom with the disease resistance of a modern hybrid. I got those traits, but not much fruit. After the first flush, the plants produced only a few tomatoes--which was a disappointment because the tomatoes tasted so good.

My garden, raised beds, is 30+ years old on the shore of a large lake in coastal N.E. Maine. We have a lot of cool damp weather and a fairly short growing season. My favorite eating tomatoes are Cherokee Purple, but I lose half or more to systemic late blight before they ripen. Three years ago I first tried C C Blacks. No blight, beautiful fruits, Very meaty, great flavor. All my neighbors love them. I now raise CC Blacks, Mortgage Lifters, Early girls and Sungold cherries

Good taste , but… 0 people found this helpful

These tomato’s grow well and taste very good however they took forever to ripen. They also had a tendency to split and have surface deformities like most beefsteak type tomato’s . These areas have to be cut off so there is wasted tomato. I would not buy again.

Won’t buy again 0 people found this helpful

Bought this variety because it was listed as a very good tasting tomato. Well it’s no better than your average tomato. It grows well takes a long time to ripen here in south western PA. The large ones get those cracks and for lack of a better word deformities as seen in beefsteak tomato’s. My advice stick to the old standby tomato’s that have been around for decades.

Many tomatoes on a healthy plant 0 people found this helpful

I was very pleased with Chef Choice Black. The plant was very healthy, producing a good amount of fruit. And the resulting tomatoes were great in sandwiches. At least the ones the squirrels let me have. Planting again this year.
