Description / Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Star Cluster'

If you have tried other colorful coreopsis billed as "perennial" and found them short-lived, it's time to step up to the Big Bang™ series. The brainchild of breeder Darrell Probst, these 100% perennial cultivars are the result of thousands of crosses among at least 8 species of coreopsis. The result? Gorgeous colors, great vigor, nonstop blooms for months with no deadheading, and compact habit.

Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Star Cluster' flowers for at least 5 months in most climates, setting masses and masses of 1½- to 2½-inch daisies. The petals are white around a bright yellow center, and in cooler weather, vivid grape-purple streaks appear at the base and around the edges of every petal. Wow!

These blooms begin in early summer and continue well into fall. Great for cutting, they need no deadheading and are unbelievably profuse. And because they're sterile, you'll get no unwanted volunteers in next spring's garden.

Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Star Cluster' is a cultivar of native species, so it has excellent natural resistance to pests and diseases. Deer tend to leave it alone, and it is mildew-free. The plant is mounded but compact, just 18 to 24 inches high and wide. Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Star Cluster' makes a great groundcover in sunny spots, asking only for good soil drainage. Like all coreopsis, 'Star Cluster' puts up well with heat, humidity, drought, infertile soil, cold, and other stresses.

Arrived with broken stem 0 people found this helpful

It came with one stem broken and some rotten leaves. It looks like it was a tall plant and cut to fit in the box. The tip of the stems were dry. It may be okay but I'm not so sure...

Pretty, but not mine… 0 people found this helpful

I was excited the plant arrived. The plants arrived brown and dormant . I prepped my soil, planted, watered and no life yet. I don’t see any green.

blooms up a storm, but not what I expected 2 people found this helpful

    Rating

My plants arrived in quart sized pots last Fall, a little straggled but not too bad for mail order. The blossoms then were small and some of the blooms had the purple streak. I am in Zone 8 and these little troopers stayed green all winter. By the end of May they were vigorous, full size plants! They began blooming and have bloomed profusely ever since and at varied heights so all the dead flower heads are not noticeable, which is awesome. I get lots of positive comments about them. However, I need to find a different place for them because they are easily 26" tall, 36" wide as the stems sprawl and needed to have some support, and the color is not white. I didn't expect the purple streak in the heat of summer (as it says it appears in cool weather) but am disappointed that the petals are cream colored, not white. So: too tall, too wide, cream and yellow blossoms all do not work in the places I have them. They are vigorous and bloom profusely so I will try to find a place to move them, or give them away.

No color on center! 0 people found this helpful

I didn’t really notice the part that said,”In cooler locations the center is colorful.” I live in southwest Georgia where it is definitely not cooler! But on the up side, the are prolific bloomers.
