You may never buy tomato paste or sauce at the store again after tasting this superb heirloom Italian tomato. A favorite since the early 19th century for robust, tangy, "tomatoey" sauces, it sets a long, heavy crop of knobby, lobed red fruit that have absolutely no plate appeal but fantastic flavor.

Beginning early in the season, continuing right through the hottest days (it loves balmy heat) and persisting long into fall, this vigorous vine sets masses of small, deeply lobed, irregular fruit. They would not win any beauty contests, but they are just perfect for canning, their flavor preceded by a rich, sharp aroma that tells you you've left the bland world of modern hybrids far behind. Treasured in Italy for many generations, Costoluto Genovese is the secret ingredient in countless family recipes for everything from lasagna to spaghetti sauce.

The flavor comes from the high acidic content of this fruit, which makes a hearty base for any dish. Discover the true tomato tang with Costoluto Genovese. It's the best tomato we've ever seen for juicing, and it tastes delicious on sandwiches and in salads, too.

Start seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant outdoors when danger of frost is past and night temperatures consistently remain above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If an unexpected late frost is forecasted, protect young plants with plastic sheeting or other cover. Set plants 2 to 2½ feet apart.

The flavor of this tomato is amazing ~ rich and complex. Every neighbor I gave them to raved about them. The tomatoes themselves are small so I will grow more plants this year to make up for the size

Would Not Order Again 0 people found this helpful

I make my own tomato sauce and salsa and decided to switch this year from Roma types to the Costoluto. I have been growing for years and have had great past success with other tomato varieties but not this year with the Costoluto.. Fruit is smaller, flatter, slow to ripen and the ribbed shape makes them difficult to peel. My yield was quite poor as well. Ordered Big Boy Hybrid and Whopper CR and they were fabulous. Love Park Seeds, but I will not waste my time and money on the Costoluto variety again. Will consider other sauce-variety alternatives next year.

possibly low germination 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

I have been gardening for about 40 years, and I run a commercial farm, for which we buy seed in truckload lots. I have some experience with growing plants. We are seeing about 10% germination rate on these particular seeds. We used a commercial potting soil, I am going to send a sample in to the lab we use for a soil test to see if there is a problem with the soil, but, based on results so far, looks like these seeds are basically non viable.

Has a unique flavor. An excellent canning tomato. I love the ribbed form. One neighbor tells me this is his favorite tomato to eat.

short squatty tomatoes 0 people found this helpful

I was not happy with these tomatoes, the blossom end and stem end practically met in the middle so you can't slice them. They spoiled within a day of picking. Other tomatoes have better flavor

Package says it is not recommended to direct sow this variety of tomato. I did and have had nice germination. Look forward to fruits this summer.

This is a very heirloom tasting tomato. If the fruit had been taller instead of flat it would be awesome. Maybe my fault. Produced 10 15/ plant

Wouldn't buy again 0 people found this helpful

Maybe they taste better grown in Italy, but in my soil they had no flavor whatsoever. I grow 10 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes and have tried numerous other ones over the years, and all have more flavor than these. Even hybrids have more flavor. After tasting 3 tomatoes and throwing them out after one bite, I pulled the plant to make room for something else. I wouldn't even bother taking the time to make sauce with these. Any other heirloom paste tomato variety is better for sauce and this is defintely not a slicing tomato.

Great taste but smaller than picture suggests 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

I like the intense tomato flavor very much, especially in sauces. In my experience, the tomatoes have been what I would consider to be small- to medium-sized. The catalog and Website pictures look like they were closeups. I think the pictures make the tomatoes appear larger than what one would actually get.

Great Tomato for Sauce 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

Heavy production, great for making fantastic sauce (we chopped and roasted the tomatoes and then putting through a food mill to remove seeds and skin). Also dehydrated some for tasty dried tomatoes. Neighbors enjoyed them fresh, too. Second season of growing them - will grow again.

My family didn't care for the texture of the meat of this tomato. It took forever to ripen and wasn't worth the wait. It was a pretty tomato; all looks.

Heavy producer, rich smoky taste 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

This heirloom is a heavy producer on a tall sturdy plant. Keep the bottom branches trimmed off to help reduce blight. The rick smoky taste is great in sauces, and adds a complexity to salads, burgers and antipasto plates.
