Description / Crocosmia 'Lucifer' Falling Stars Bulbs

Despite its sinister-sounding name, this flower is a great addition to any yard or garden.

'Lucifer' is an eye-catching and very garden-worthy Crocosmia (Falling Stars), excellent when used in the border, where its long stalks and vibrant red flowers can set any landscaping design ablaze with beauty. This flower is a perfect way for gardens in the northern regions to bring a touch of tropical flair home. The stems provide an elegant, delicate look, topped by fiery red flowers from midsummer into early fall.

However, even when not in bloom, 'Lucifer' Falling Stars thin leaves serve as an attractive addition in beds as a green filler. 'Lucifer' grows straight upward, neat and tidy, reaching 3 to 4 feet high in full flower, but stretching only 18 inches wide. Great for small spaces that need a pop of brilliance.

These flowers are also great at attracting some welcome guests like hummingbirds or butterflies who can help pollinate your garden and add a lovely touch of storybook ambience. And when the blooms are cut for the vase, they can last several weeks.

Add this perennial to your garden today. It needs nothing beyond sun and well-drained soil to grow and bloom beautifully for years.

None of these bulbs grew. Planted exactly how it said and not a single one grew.

Years ago I found some crocosmia. They had been growing in an abandoned lot. I dug them up and brought them home. Each corm weighed quite a few ounces, measuring almost 3 inches across. They thrived at my home for decades, loving the summer scorching heat and my sprinklers. I had to leave that home, and moved into an apartment. Now, years later, I received some crocosmia corms. Unfortunately these were nothing like the previous giants from the past: the size of a large grape, and barely any weight. I hope they grow larger over the years as corms can. I remember the old plants standing almost three feet tall, with stalks of flames another foot or two. We shall see what develops now. We shall see…

This was my favorite flower in my parents' garden growing up, it comes back year after year, in England. Here, in Ohio, I started growing these in my garden and have been delighted every year, and they spread out a little more year by year, have attractive mid height.
