Description / Delphina™ Light Blue White Bee Delphinium Seeds

Fleuroselect Novelty Award

At last, a delphinium that's petite enough to put in containers yet strong and very heavy-blooming, with double blooms that may repeat. And the best part. This is an open-pollinated seed variety. We throw around the term "breeding breakthrough" sometimes, but it's really true in the case of Delphina.

Already a sensation in Europe, where it swept away a Fleuroselect Novelty Award, Delphina is just 20 inches high and 16 inches wide, yet branches nicely with no pinching or other help from you, and sets big double blooms of soft powder-blue with a bold white bee (central cluster of petals). It blooms heavily in late spring and early summer, and then sometimes repeats.

Delphina is easy to grow in full sun, and attracts butterflies as well as hummingbirds. Nibbling rabbits and deer leave it alone, and it makes excellent cut-flowers, whether fresh or dried. This sun-lover appreciates deadheading to stimulate rebloom. But be sure to leave the final flowers of the season on the plant, so it can self-sow.

Direct sow these seeds into the warm spring soil or, for quicker blooms, begin indoors a few weeks before the last anticipated frost. The seeds germinate within 2 weeks at 60 degrees Fahrenheit, lightly covered (or dropped into the planting holes of the Bio Dome.) After the seeds sprout, grow on in a low humidity setting with cooler temperatures. It is ready to transplant when it has 5 or 6 sets of true leaves and the soil is warm.

I keep trying 0 people found this helpful

I love Delphiniums, but they have always been very difficult for me. Bought 2 packs of seeds -- one pack I cold stratified before sowing indoors, the other just sowed indoors. Didn't matter as germination was poor for both lots. Then even if they sprouted, many would just fade away for no apparent reason. Now about 45 days after sowing, I have maybe 6 still tiny seedlings of the 100 seeds I originally sowed. I will be lucky if even one survives to flower. I don't blame Park Seed, I blame this particular flower, as it has always been a difficult plant for me. I keep trying, though, because of the few that I have been able to keep alive, they are the most beautiful flowers in the garden.

Delphinium is difficult 0 people found this helpful

I love delphiniums, but have never had much luck with them. However, the photos of this gorgeous blue enticed me to try again. I bought 2 seed packets. One I cold stratified, the other just sowed at room temp. Didn't see much of a difference-- germination was poor with both methods. After sowing 100 seeds I have maybe 4 or 5 that are still alive. Sowed back in mid Feb and the few seedlings that made it are still tiny. I don't blame Park Seeds, I blame the fussiness of delphinium. Hopefully one or two might make it to bloom time?

No luck 0 people found this helpful

I’ve bought probably 15 varieties of seeds this year and this is the only one that didn’t germinate. I have the Biodome so I know that the seeds had the right environment. Very disappointed.

Last year I tried White Bee Delphinium for the first time and the flowers were gorgeous. They looked great against my fence. I am ordering more seeds to expand my garden.

Poor Germination 0 people found this helpful

I "planted" these seeds (on Sept 15, 2020). So far, zero germination despite following the instructions on the packet and using a grow light and bottom watering. I will try again with the remaining seeds I have and use another method.
