Description / Dragon's Breath® Celosia Seeds

Has there ever been such a radiantly beautiful celosia? This variegated cockscomb offers red-hot plumes above olive-green leaves edged in and shot with red accents. A late-flowering variety, it holds beautifully, thrives in heat and humidity, and doesn't mind drying out a bit between waterings'. It's the answer to the container gardener's biggest summer dilemma, and a boon for any sunny setting.

Dragon's Breath is a magnificent presence in the annual bed, patio pot, and vase. It grows quickly and flowers over a long, late season, extending the glory of the celosias into fall. And there is simply nothing like it in terms of eye-popping, irresistible color.

Reaching 2 feet high in bloom, Dragon's Breath actually increases its leaf and flower production in hot, humid weather, and likes its soil on the dry side. Many container annuals simply cannot last in the punishing conditions of August, but Dragon's Breath prefers the soil to dry a bit between waterings', so those sweltering days are no problem. Amazing.

The variegated foliage is another boon, keeping Dragon's Breath handsome both before and after bloom as well as during its long show of color. You will love the red-and-green mix on these leaves: it shades rather than outlines, so you can't really tell where the green ends and red begins.

Dragon's Breath seed does best when direct sown, and once it has germinated, it would rather not be moved. Sow the seed outdoors well after all danger of frost has passed, setting it just ⅛-inch deep and covering lightly. It should sprout in 5 to 7 days. Thin the plants to about 8 inches apart for dense, leaf-to-leaf coverage. They should be blooming by mid-July from a May sowing.

If you prefer to begin them indoors, here's how: Sow them at 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, ⅛-inch deep and covered lightly. After germination, grow on at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and bottom-water with lukewarm water to avoid chills. The seedlings are usually ready to transplant in just 3 weeks. When you set them outdoors, protect them from direct sun for about a week while they acclimatize.

Gorgeous, Easy 3 people found this helpful

10/10 of my seeds germinated. Of the 6 I put in my garden, performance was awesome. The first three went in a garden in early April, and got HUGE - well over 3' HxW, and big flower plumes all over. These got almost no supplemental watering. The other 3 were put in the ground in June. They never got as big as their siblings, but they were beautiful, too, just a big less monstrous looking. All grew and bloomed beautifully with very little fertilizer or supplemental watering. I can't wait to see if I get volunteers - I left all the dead plants NOT deadheaded and in the ground until Jan 15. I bought another pack from Park for this year, and I"m going to compare these to the seeds I collected from last year's plants. I can't wait to see how the perform against each other.

I only had a few germinate and none lived to transplant. I started many plants and these are the only ones that did so poorly.

Long Lasting / Great Color 2 people found this helpful

It’s almost November and these are still going strong. Color is extremely vibrant. Planted some in the top of a strawberry pot with mint growing from the bottom and these are now almost 3 feet tall with blooms everywhere. An absolute show-stopper for my fall displays. Love them!

beautiful color 2 people found this helpful

I love Dragon's Breath celosia. I have grown it several times in the past and will continue to do so. I purchased one packet this year. The germination was excellent; every seed in the package sprouted. My plants grow about three feet tall and 18 to 24" wide, bushy and full. The pretty red flowers appear late in the season, in September. The foliage is a beautiful reddish green and looks good by itself, even without the flowers.

6/10 germinated. Wonderful color - great contrast with Orange Whopper marigolds. Very robust plant. Wilted when I didn't water but plumped right up when I did. Still stunning halfway through September.

Only 50 percent germination. Slow growing and looked weakly in the beginning. They do get stronger in time. I started indoors earlier so I can enjoy before first frost arrives.

Few sprouted, but I can still recommend 3 people found this helpful

Of the 10 seeds, only 3 sprouted, but the plants performed spectacularly. Super colorful, large, lush, and the deer didn't go near 'em.
