Espoma Organic® Seed Starter Mix
Description / Espoma Organic® Seed Starter Mix
Give your potted plants the best possible environment with Espoma Organic Seed Starting Mix. This premium blend of all-natural ingredients is formulated to stimulate optimal root growth and to help the soil retain the moisture that seedlings need during those hot, dry months.
Better ingredients mean stronger growth and larger, healthier, more resilient plants. Espoma Organic is composed of 80-90% Canadian sphagnum peat moss, perlite, yucca extract, and limestone to adjust pH. This mix provides the perfect environment for growing seedlings, promotes root growth, improves moisture retention, and helps plants grow larger bloom more abundantly.
A side benefit of Espoma Organic is that, unlike most non-organic mixtures, it doesn't have that strong chemical odor that can be so pervasive (especially indoors). Nothing but good stuff, so the natural pleasant fragrance of foliage and flowers comes through.
Espoma has been a trusted name in organic garden products since 1929, and we are delighted to make this seed starting mix available to you this season. Stock up now, and enjoy bursting flowerpots, trailing baskets, and burgeoning window boxes all season long.
NOTE: Product is filled by volume and may settle in shipping. Product may also dry out over time while in storage. Simply moisten product to reconstitute prior to use for seed starting.

Fungus Gnats 0 people found this helpfulI bought 10 bags of the Ensoma Seed starting mix a few years ago and got infested with Fungus gnats. I am STILL trying to rid my home, plants and seed starting area of these creatures. They will kill your seedlings.

Happy 2 people found this helpfulI use the biodome to start my seeds but use this organic seed soil when it's time to transplant. Mix it with a popular potting soil for the best texture for delicate roots. I have a very high success rate.
-
Love this mix 2 people found this helpfulI did not have a hydration problem with this mix. I found it nurtured very healthy seedlings and showed no fungal growth like some others. This is the only mix I use.
-
Give yourself time 2 people found this helpfulThis is a nice seed mix and so far everything has shot out of the ground. My bags were bone dry, which made them light to ship but required a few hours of rehydration before they could be used. Plan ahead.

Terrible seed starter 1 people found this helpfulThis is the worst seed starter ever. The water just sits on top and will not soak in. I was wondering why my seeds weren't sprouting and the ones that did weren't thriving. Then I dug down into the soil and could see why. I should have read the other review on this starter. Waste of time and money!

Potting material 1 people found this helpfulIt was advertised as a potting material, it was almost impossible to get it to take water before using. Don’t waste your time with this product.
-
Waterproof seed starter 1 people found this helpfulI should have read the other review before buying this product. It was spot on. This seed starter is waterproof. I kept wondering why some of my seeds that are normally up within a couple days, were taking so long to sprout. Then I dug into the soil a little and found out why. The soil does not absorb the water. It just sits on top. Waste of time and money.

Love this starter 1 people found this helpfulEspoma seed starting mix has worked wonderful for me. You have to pre-moisten it which doesn’t take very long. I actually find that therapeutic especially when it’s too cold outside to get into the dirt. It’s a matter of pouring it into a container adding water and mixing well until you can squeeze it into a ball without getting water dripping out. Less than five minutes – easy Peezy and the ceilings always do well when I use this mix. Highly recommend Espoma products.

never again 1 people found this helpfuli prefer to bottom water my seeds and seedling, after sitting in water for 12 hours never reached the surface, this product IMO is total rubbish, never again
-
Not a problem pre-wetting 2 people found this helpfulI took an easier route from the other reviewer. Put the starter in a large bowl and spray it with warm water. Then mix with your hands or a spoon. You may need to spray it again. Presto: it's hydrated. If I have any leftover wet starter, I leave it in the bowl until it dries out again before returning it to the bag.

Nice product 1 people found this helpfulI moisten this as with all other seed starter mixes i've used in a tidy tray. I just add water until i get a moist consistency that is not sopping wet. It does take a little more water to get it moist than some other seed starter mixes i've used. This seems to be a smart mix though, it holds water but not overly, i find i have to water just a little less which is super nice when you have a lot of seeds going. The seeds sprouted in pretty equal time of another brand i was testing against this. The only thing i didn't like was i had to pick a few twigs out of one of the bottom of the bags where it was just too many. It may have just been that bag. I will buy again.

Dry but good once hydrated 1 people found this helpfulDitto the other reviewer.. this stuff must be hydrated, but it is useful.

Does not promote growth 1 people found this helpfulThis is the second year I’ve had this experience with Espoma’s seed starting mix, after using it successfully for several years. Seeds germinate well, but once the first set of true leaves appear, stop growing. The cotyledons often turn yellow or reddish— which can be a sign of nutrient deficiency or an abnormal pH. Once I transplant the seedlings into another brand of potting soil, they resume growth, if I do that soon enough before they are too stunted. I have learned my lesson and will not buy this brand again. The Fafard brand that spark used to carry worked wonderfully.

Ok if you're patient 5 people found this helpfulThe seed starter is ok if you have the patience to wait for it to get hydrated. It is incredibly hydrophobic. Don't expect to use it without pre-wetting the mixture. I put it in a zip-lock and add water, squishing it around once in a while over a couple of days. Yes, days. If you're in a hurry, use coir.

Use with care 2 people found this helpfulThis starting mix is good. The plants seem to enjoy it. I have not used it for starting seeds, only transplants. BUT, and this is a big one. Wet this stuff a couple of hours - yes I said a couple of hours before using, because it's HARD to get wet. Don't put it in your planting cups first. This extra step will save you a lot of frustration. The water runs off and out faster than it soaks in. Put it in a bucket, add some water and walk away. Just walk away! One particular bag took me 2 hours to get it moisten enough to use it.

Something wrong this year 1 people found this helpfulI’ve used Espoma Seed Starting Mix before, with good results. However, this year, something was wrong with their formulation. Seedlings languished, everything I planted put out one or two leaves ( or sets of leaves), then completely stopped growing. Tomato seedling cotyledons turned yellow after only two small true leaves had formed, and those true leaves were purple on the underside—a sign of nutritional deficiency, I believe. Once I potted seedlings into (another brand of) potting soil, they resumed growth. Although I’m hoping I wasn’t too late with the tomatoes, they look very sickly.
