Description / Green Arrow Pea Seeds

Days to Maturity: 70 from direct sow

You'll enjoy big harvests from this vigorous shelling pea. A main-season English pea that often sets double pods, Green Arrow (also known as Green Shaft) is an old and well-respected name for generous yields of large, tasty seeds that can be eaten fresh or frozen.

This plant grows quickly to 24 to 28 inches high. Stake it to hold up its bounty of plump 4-inch-long green pods, each packed with up to 11 delicious seeds. Many gardeners use a pea fence or trellis with pea plants on either side to save space. Widely adapted, Green Arrow tolerates powdery mildew and fusarium wilt, which improves the size of its yields and the quality of its crop.

Peas are a cool-season crop, easy to grow and very quick to harvest. Sow the seeds outdoors (they do not like to be transplanted) as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring (1 to 2 weeks before last anticipated frost date is a good rule of thumb). Direct sow the seeds 1 to 2 inches apart and 1 to 1½ inches deep. In warm southern and western climates, peas are also ideal as a fall crop started in late summer.

Great germination and harvest--and send to be improving my soil 1 people found this helpful

I had a bed where nothing would grow, and when I did a soil test, the result was "nitrogen depleted." Rather than trying traditional fertilizers, I decided to try planting peas to do some nitrogen fixation and get some delicious side effects. These seeds did it all! Great germination. Nice sized peas and an average of 8 peas per pod. And plants that haven't bloomed in 6 years in this bed suddenly came back with a vengeance. Would definitely buy again for either harvesting or soil maintenance.

Plant peas on St. Patrick's Day. Learned that growing up in NJ. Now living in NC, so modified that for latitude and global warming - planted March 2. Maybe should have planted 2-3 weeks earlier? These seeds are vigorous and grow strongly if innoculated. Vines are 5 feet. Pods are mostly near the top - fat and loaded with peas. Two scares along the way to harvest: 1) 80 degree heat spells that are supposed to end flower production, but didn't. I sprayed with cold water trying to keep soil temp down and it worked. But I have only harvested once so far and yesterday it got up to 97F, with 94 expedted today. Fingers crossed harvest will continue and peas will be sweet. 2) No pollinators! No bees on the pea flowers, but saw a few wasps. Then a neighbor explained that peas are self-pollinating hermaphrodites. Averaging about 9 peas per pod - very sweet so far. Simmer for 8 minutes with butter, salt, and pepper. Hoping production will continue after current heat spell. Will buy these again.

Did not grow as described! 0 people found this helpful

This pea was supposed to be 24-28" tall but grew to 6' tall! Not prepared for this with fencing. Also was supposed to be resistant to powdery mildew, but the mildew was so bad on the plants and also the pea pods that I had to pull out the plants before they were done producing.

These were so good, we only got them to the dinner table one time. We ate them regularly while working in the garden. Should just call them breakfast.

Known as Hurst Greenshaft in England, this pea produces abundant pods filled with very sweet peas. Very reliable, excellent germination, can't speak highly enough about this variety.
