Description / Isotoma White Star Creeper
Isotoma White Star Creeper is an evergreen perennial groundcover that offers year-round interest and blooms from late spring into late summer, creating a flat carpet of small starry white flowers hovering above a dense, lush mat of fine-textured green foliage.
An Isotoma fluviatilis variety, commonly called white star creeper, laurentia, or swamp isotome, White Star has low growing, spreading habit and medium growth rate. Shown to best effect when massed, it is great for underplanting and erosion control, but it holds up well to foot traffic, making it ideal for planting along pathways and between paving stones or for replacing turf lawn, in moderate climates. It also makes a nice bed, border, or container plant. It's a natural for a rock garden and is worth growing as an annual in cold-winter regions.
A low maintenance plant, White Star creeper grows best in sunny to partly shady locations with consistently moist, well-draining soil. But it tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, sandy, and rocky soils, as well as full sun in cold climates, as long as it's well-watered. It does not require deadheading but may benefit from a good shearing to about 1-inch tall in late fall to keep it tidy through winter. To make new plantings, in early spring, break plants apart into small pieces.
