Description / Komachi Balloon Flower Seeds

The most exotic Balloon Flower yet, Komachi resembles a mass of blue umbrellas seen from above, something like Renoir's famous painting Les Parapluies. They look for all the world like huge, unopened buds, with neatly-drawn seams around each petal and a puffed-up, light-as-air form. The compact plants reach 18 inches tall in the garden, sporting a mixture of small green balloons and larger blue at the same time. An eye-catching and beautiful display!

As colorful as an annual, Platycodon is actually quite hardy and long-lived, increasing the length of its bloomtime for several years after becoming established in the garden. Excellent for garden or vase, they flourish in the sunny garden. Pkt is 25 seeds.

We bought a packet of seeds in (believe it or not) in 2010. They were still going strong when we moved away in 2023. Now we will be starting over at our new home. The best things about Komanchi are they are tall and upright and the balloons last longer before opening.

Purchased a packet of seeds twice. Never got A single plant. I’m a very proficient gardener I used to see trace, but there was never any germination.

I have ordered these 3 times and never saw a single flower. I managed to get a few to actually become plants but none ever bloomed. But they're so cool I'm still going to try again! Yep, I'm chasing the dragon.

Unfortunately my balloon flower seeds never sprouted. I’m not sure why, I followed the directions and tried two different packets.

    I didn't receive 25 seeds. I received 17. Nicely packaged, however.

Very disappointed with this seed 1 people found this helpful

After seeding this plant 4 months ago, the flower started blooming. We're already on the 5th "full bloom", but unfortunately, all of them have completely opened up. This variety is supposed to remain closed as seen in the picture. Instead they just look like regular balloon flower, completely opening up.

Great plant 0 people found this helpful

Seeds were sown in February and like the Astra Pink that I purchased, they took about 4 weeks to germinated. However, the put size on more quickly than the Astra Pink did once I bumped them up from plug trays to 4.5" pots. Once planted in the ground, the plants adapted quickly. Some plants are blooming already and plants are more floppy than the Astra Pink plants that I have in my garden.

Superb for bouquets & border 0 people found this helpful

I started Komachi from seed 8-years ago and my plants are still going strong. It is a good 'blue' that is hard to achieve in the garden - especially from mid-summer to fall. It is long lasting in the vase. Its season of bloom takes it well past other perennials. Komachi is not invasive but will politely re-seed itself at a rate much like digitalis (foxglove). Tall enough to be a spectacular companion with oriental lilies - but rarely needs staking.
