Description / 'Masquerade' Nemesia Flower Seeds

Just in time for Mardi Gras come these amazing blooms, which look for all the world like little masked faces. Of all the hundreds of plants I grew last year, 'Masquerade' was my hands-down favorite. Not only has there never been a Nemesia like it, but I don't think it has any rival in the entire horticultural world.

Each of the blooms sports a bold lavender-blue "mask" on golden petals—nothing like the sloppy faces on pansies, but an actual pointed, perfectly uniform little mask, so that from a distance the plant looks like a sea of mouse faces.

And as if the fascinating color pattern weren't enough, these blooms are wonderfully fragrant, with a coconut-like scent you'll love.

'Masquerade' doesn't pull a Cinderella when it comes to bloomtime, either—you can expect the flowers to keep coming from mid-spring into summer, popping up all over well-branched little plants. Perfect for the annual bed as well as containers of all types, this Nemesia asks only full sunshine and any moist, well-drained soil to keep blooming for weeks and weeks on end.

Sow these seeds in darkness, either indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last anticipated frost, or directly where you want them to grow outdoors. (If sowing outdoors, cover them well.) Germination takes a week or two. As the young plants grow, pinch them back to encourage bushiness and better branching. Stunning!

Did not germinate 6 people found this helpful

Very disappointed. I was looking forward to the flowers. I bought these last year for our new property. I have tried planting them 3 different ways now with zero luck. I tried direct sow and in a pot last year, and thought I'd wait until this year to try again with sowing them as I found on the internet. The method this year was in a flat starter tray. I didn't want to give a low rating because I thought maybe I just didn't do a good enough job last year. Well, nothing this year either. I am leaving an identical review for another seed I received and had the same luck. I also got some salvia seeds that did beautifully. In fact, the plants came back in my daughters flower bed that I gave her to plant. Those will get 5 stars.

Disappointed 4 people found this helpful

The package states if starting seeds indoors, plant 2-3 weeks before last frost but online it says to start 4 to 6 weeks before last frost. The directions state germination temps should be 70-75 F but all other websites with growing directions advise much cooler temps in the 60s. Finally, there were not 50 seeds in the package. I use to use Park's for their exceptional growing advice and germination requirements but disappointed.

I made up hanging baskets using for fillers calibrachoa and shock wave petunia, bacopa for the spiller and this nemesia for the thriller. These stand up straight and are so interesting and really do look like little adorable masks! They are very small so use this in an area or container that they can be looked at up close. Just remember to pinch or trim early on as recommended so they can bush up a little bit and will hold up well.

From seed to flower these plants are super easy to grow and care for. Low to no maintenance. My transplants were placed in relatively shallow and poor soil, and yet they are thriving! These flowers are full of personality and demand closer inspection from passersby. Love them.
