Description / Maverick™ Scarlet Geranium Seeds

Oh, how we love the Mavericks. They are a southern gardener's salvation, thriving even in the sopping-wet humidity and searing heat of our summers. Other container plants look wilted even the same day you water them, but never Maverick. It's compact, well-branched, large-flowered, and thoroughly agreeable to weather extremes. We wouldn't want anything less for our terracotta pots and white window boxes.

Maverick is a very compact plant, reaching just 14 to 16 inches high (in full bloom) and nearly as wide. The foliage is large, softly lobed and creased, and bright green. It forms bushy rosettes beneath the flowering stems, which hold their giant spheres of blooms several inches above the rest of the plant.

And such blooms they are. Scarlet is a dark shade of red with a hint of orange, infused with rich color that stands out perfectly in the garden. The flowerheads are beautifully rounded and quite large, attracting attention wherever they appear. And they keep coming from the first whiff of hot June weather until the Halloween decorations go up.

Maverick is an annual geranium, which is to say not a true geranium at all, but a pelargonium, known by some gardeners as cranesbills. If you live in a frost-free climate, though, you can probably overwinter them successfully. If you don't, bring your favorites in for winter and put them in a bright window. They'll live for years with this kind of treatment. (They're also easy to propagate. Pick up some rooting hormone at the nursery and dip the cut stems of a mature Maverick into it, then plant them in a Whopper Bio Dome or small pot. They'll root like nobody's business.)

Geraniums are the essence of summer for many of us gardeners. Their very scent—a sort of garden-y aroma, not a floral but somewhat peppery and earthy—signals the arrival of summer. Nothing is more cheerful in pots marching up the porch steps or in window boxes leaning out over the garden. And they are a terrific bedding plant for full sun or light shade.

If you like Maverick Scarlet (and how could you not), we also offer orange, as well as the formula mix of all the Maverick colors. Try them all, choose your favorites, and enjoy the bliss of growing annuals that love the hot summer weather as much as you do.

Strong, lovely red geraniums 3 people found this helpful

I grew the Maverick Scarlet and Orange Geraniums in spring 2024 (my first time growing geraniums/pelargoniums from seed). Started them in 5x5 trays over heat in darkness; germination was near-complete within 3 days, and the seedlings grew into robust plants. I even have 3 seeds leftover of the Scarlet as there were 13 seeds in that packet. Picture shows scarlet geranium in pot, with an orange maverick in the front of the planter above it.

Started all 100 but less than 50% germination rate is pretty disappointing. Not sure if that’s normal for Geranium seeds.

Poor Germination 3 people found this helpful

I bought the 100 pack of these seeds. I put them in a quality seed starting mix, used a temperature controlled heat May and had them under grow lights. Only 4 of the 100 germinated. They were in the same environment as wave petunias which had roughly a 75-80% germination. I’m. It sure why these geraniums had such a poor rate but it is disappointing.

Excellent and lasts through hard frost 4 people found this helpful

This was the first time I started Geraniums from seed. Soaked the seeds for 2 days then planted them covered very lightly, and placed on a heat map. Almost 100% germination! Strong performer throughout the season, flowering all summer and through late fall/late November (with occasional deadheading). I am about to order for my 2024 season. PS. I am in the DC area. USDA zone 7B.

Oh So Red! 3 people found this helpful

I planted these in the garden and in pots and they are spectacular! I'm in zone 7B (North GA) where our summers are hot and humid-2022 was superhot. The seedlings were planted in a narrow space between my concrete walkway and the brick wall leading to the front door. I thought the wall would prove to provide too much radiating heat for the plants BUT, they love it! They were planted out in March and as of today, November 10th, they are still blooming! The foliage is still beautiful, and I imagine they will keep going since the brick wall will provide some warmth during the winter. I will see just how long these will last. The color on the blooms have not yet faded so they are as bright as they were in the Spring! Easy to grow from seed. Even the pattern on the leaves are beautiful! I look forward to planting the Maverick Orange this winter. I wish I could post pictures!

Easy to grow, heavy bloomer 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

I planted these in January in small pots with potting soil on my window sills -- no heating mats, no grow lights-- and had excellent germination. They remained healthy and by March they were ready for larger pots and by April I began "hardening them off" so that by May they were blooming and planted outdoors. I had no issues with insects or diseases. Deer occasionally ate the blooms but avoided the leaves and stems. They bloomed heavily and the bright flowers stand well above the plants on longer stems so they're quite "showy." These plants look better with deadheading and a bit of grooming to remove old leaves. They continued to grow until late November when a heavy frost finally killed the plants. I wish the other geraniums in the Maverick series would be available in individual colors.

Surprisingly Successful 0 people found this helpful

I have had close to 100% rate of germination. This was the first experience I have had with growing geraniums (pelargoniums), and I am inspired to continue with this one. I have yet to discover a way to overwinter geraniums here in Washington State. I believe that I may bring them into the house this winter because the garage is unheated, and there is no space for them there. I am thinking that they will need to remain dormant for the winter if I am to see them bloom nicely next summer.

I've grown these gorgeous flowers twice in terra cotta pots. They are so worth waiting for to say the least. You will love these flowers. However, you may need to treat for catapillars, (sp) who love to eat the leaves. It's worth the trouble, as they are spectacular & will give much pleasure!
