Description / Megaton Hybrid Cabbage Seeds

This over-achiever reaches a tremendous size (not to mention weight!) without sacrificing an iota of sweet, mild flavor. The huge heads measure up to 16 inches in diameter and weigh a staggering 15 pounds, with a small core and plenty of rich, tender leaves tightly packed within! The pale-green wrappers protect the succculent leaves within, making Megaton Hybrid one of the tastiest as well as the largest you can find anywhere!

Yields are very heavy, too, thanks to great disease resistance. Megaton Hybrid resists Fusarium Yellows, Tip Burn, Ring Spot, and Split. It holds longer in the garden than most, and is terrific for both spring and fall crops. If you like your cabbage big and tasty -- VERY big and VERY tasty -- Megaton Hybrid is the one to grow!

Cabbage is a cool-season crop, sown in early spring for early-summer harvest or in mid- to late summer for fall harvest. Where winters are mild, it can be sown nearly year-round, except during the hot summer months. Start indoors or direct-sow, spacing plants 12 inches apart for maximum harvest. Before planting, prepare the soil well with fertilizer, and add a dose of ammonium nitrate about a month into the growth season. Harvest the heads when they are firm and brightly colored. Plants may form smaller side-heads after the main head is harvested. Pkt is 50 seeds.

Wonderful! 1 people found this helpful

I've grown these cabbages in Ohio for several years and have nothing bad to say about them at all. At first, I thought they were just a novelty cabbage, but boy was I wrong. Their taste is mild and sweet, and they do make the best sauerkraut. I've also noticed that the cabbage moths that have eaten other cabbages in my garden into lace tend to leave these cabbages alone, or do very minimal damage. I can't explain that but I'm not arguing with it, either. :^)

Mine split 1 people found this helpful

Bought the seed several years ago, but what I started didn't seem to do much. This year I finally got 6 of them to grow and produce. Nice sized heads. biggest weighed 14 lbs. Quit watering in late August but had to harvest because of splitting. I don't think "splitting" is a trait you can breed out. It comes from growing fast as well as taking up too much water. Got about 2.5 gallons of kraut from them. Letting the cut stems make some smaller heads. We will see what happens.

Great for making kraut 2 people found this helpful

Have grown megaton cabbage for four years. These heads are solid and not dry. Most of them average around 18 to 20 lbs. Last year I had one tip the scales at 26 lbs. Huge heads and have not had one split yet. Great boiled, fried and makes the best sauerkraut.

Pretty great cabbage 3 people found this helpful

These cabbage grew to about 14 pounds at the most for me, which is really good. They were ready for harvest much earlier than tropic giant and are very dense. They also keep well.
