Description / Melon Papayadew F1

It's hard to beat the simple pleasure of eating a sweet, juicy slice of cool melon on a hot day. This is one of our new favorite melons! This melon is as sweet and flavorful as you will find. Papayadew's rind is not only smooth and thin making it great for slicing but it turns from mild green to a creamy yellow as the fruit matures, making it easy to tell when it is ripe. A wonderful hybrid honeydew melon that rates high on the sweetness scale. The aroma and flavor suggest a luscious tropical fruit. The melons ripen white a yellow-white skin and orange flesh. It's an easy, delicious fruit that makes a great treat or snack. Melons are versatile, easy-to-grow, vining plants, with compact varieties for small gardens and even some that will grow up space-saving trellises! Give melons fertile soil and warm temperatures, and you'll harvest plenty of tasty, vitamin-rich fruits that can be enjoyed chilled or straight from the garden!

Cantaloupe in a Honeydew Skin 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I was so looking forward to this Papayadew, but it's nothing special. Just a cantaloupe in honeydew clothing. The plant itself wasn't as hardy as my other cantaloupes and I was surprised that I got any fruit at all. One fruit per plant. While all the seeds germinated, the plants didn't thrive and I ended up tossing all but 4, whereas my other melons grew normally. Perhaps these need higher temps early on than other melons? It's a smaller vine that didn't take up much space, was easy to grow on a trellis, and resisted mildew quite well. It slips neatly off the vine when ripe. The best thing about it was that it ripened earlier than my other melons so I got fresh melon in August in the PNW.
