Description / Park's Whopper Garden Bean Seeds

Days to Maturity: 57

Park's Whopper Bush Bean is an easy-to-pick variety that holds pods off the soil, this stringless bush bean, also called snap or bunch beans, sets pea-shaped buds that blossom into small "perfect" flowers followed by straight, smooth medium-green pods. This seed vegetable is also known as a legume.

This herbaceous tender annual is a mid-season determinate variety, growing in a low, self-supporting bush that stands erect and has a nice structure, suitable for containers. The large plant grows vigorously and produces a good yield that holds well, ensuring a large, one-time crop. For a continual, season-long harvest, succession plant every two weeks until mid-August.

Easy to grow and trouble free, even for the new gardener, this shallow-rooted plant prefers a sunny location with moist, fertile, organically rich, well-drained loams but performs well in low fertility soils and has proven consistent performance over various locations and growing conditions. Park's Whopper Bush Bean has a high resistance to bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and an intermediate resistance to Aphanomyces root and hypocotyl rot rust (Pss). Self-pollinating, it will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.

A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it should be direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed. Protect plants if temperatures are expected to dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature and to maintain soil moisture. Row covers offer added protection from heavy frost.

Best bean ever! 0 people found this helpful

We have not always had great success with green beans. But, this whopper bean is wonderful. Tender, no strings, we even made dilly beans. Plenty for all the neighbors too. Planting a late summer crop. Thanks Park.

Extremely productive 0 people found this helpful

I've been harvesting beans for 7 weeks now from my single Whopper plant and the flowers are still forming! I succession planted other bush bean varieties after this one and they are mostly done. We've had some extreme heat in June and July and this plant was a bit more protected than my others. But I've never had such a bountiful bush bean. Highly recommend.

These beans were very productive, and so delicious! We only planted 100 seeds, and were not only able to share with family and friends. We were able to can some too. I'm buying twice as many next year!

We bought Whopper seeds and Antiqua seeds. All the whopper's died. Maybe got 6", then shriveled up. This is in the same raised bed as the Antiqua been seeds. So not sure what happened. Will buy Antiqua seeds again next year.
