All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2014

Trendy container vegetables come and go, but Pick a Bushel is standing the test of time. This All-America Selections Winner remains the favorite for big yields of versatile, delicious cukes on plants so compact, you can grow them in containers.

Pick a Bushel works because it's not only easy to grow in any sunny spot, it's also versatile. You can pick these white-spined fruits at just 3 inches for the most delectable gherkins you will ever eat, or let them mature to about 6 inches for fresh slicers. They are sweet and crisp, completely bitter-free. Yum!

This is a semi-bush plant, bearing up to 20 fruit on average. Give it a bit of support from stakes or a small trellis, or let the fruit dangle. You will quickly see what works for you. And of course it's great in the garden as well. Expect it to reach just 10 to 12 inches high but to spread (or be trained on a support) 24 to 32 inches long.

Pick a Bushel won a regional All-America Selection award for its performance in northern climates (specifically the heartland and Great Lakes areas), but we have found it to be very successful here in the warmer south, too. The secret is its disease resistance: Pick-a-Bushel stands up to cucumber mosaic virus, maize mosaic virus, and scab, among others. This means that even first-time gardeners can be successful.

Direct-sow seeds in a sunny spot in the garden or in containers on the deck after all danger of frost is past. For an earlier crop, you can also begin the seeds indoors, transplanting when the first true leaf appears. Cucumbers can be allowed to grow on the ground or loll over the sides of containers, but for longer, straighter fruit with better support, grow the plant in a cage or on a trellis, allowing 1 foot between plants in the garden, or one plant per container. Keep Pick-a-Bushel well-watered, and pick the fruits promptly; they can become tough if left too long on the plant.

FABULOUS PLANT! 0 people found this helpful

My husband likes to make refrigerator pickles and I was looking for a more compact plant. This certainly fit the bill! I had great germination and we are getting LOADS of 4-6 inch cucumbers. Our container vegetable gardens will never again be without this plant!!

Love this variety for pickles 0 people found this helpful

Love this variety for pickles. I have been gardening for 50 years and these are the best cucumbers for pickles I have ever tried. I tried sweet gherkins for the first this year. They were wonderful. I planted in tomato cages because it says they only get 2 feet long. Mine grew bigger so next year I will be planting along a cow panel. I always grow my cucumbers up a fence or panel. So much easier to find the cucumbers, especially when you want them small. I will be planting these for now on for pickling cuxs.

We planted a small square foot garden. 4 cucumber plants. Ran them on our chain link fence. We took about 100 gallon zip lock bags of cucumbers to the local food bank. They just kept producing.

I already have tons of flowers and cucumbers going. I have 3 in a 3 gallon bucket. One even got slightly damaged but is fine now and growing as much as the other 2. Very sturdy! Can’t believe how quick they sprouted. I’m new to all this so this was exciting for me! Definitely a customer for life!

This is my second year growing Pick-a-Bushels. They are productive enough that I can pick them pretty small. The flavor at that size is exceptional.

Planted two seeds in an earth grow box on my deck. Its has taken over the deck and trailing over the side. It is LOADED with delicious cukes. Even when you miss a few and they get large they are not bitter. Highly recommend if you have the room.

perfect cukes! 2 people found this helpful

Great producers. Don't let the super-bumpy skins put you off--these are wonderful to eat whole with the skins on--not tough at all and the inner flesh is crisp and not at all bitter. They make great pickles too!

Put down a seedling in halfway decent soil, and you'll get loads of cucumbers. It's really that simple. Had no problems with bugs or mildew. When one plant peters out, plant another.
