Description / Prairie Wild Sunflower Seeds

The Prairie Sunflower, a perennial cousin to the beloved annual varieties, offers a spectacle of yellow plumes adorned with 3-inch blooms. These magnificent flowers form neat rows along their impressive length, capturing the essence of late summer's charm. For enthusiasts of wild sunflowers, the Prairie Sunflower presents an unmissable opportunity to incorporate perennial vigor into their gardens.

Thriving in sunny spots, the Prairie Sunflower can reach heights of 3 to 8 feet tall, making it a stunning addition to any garden space. It stands out for its trouble-free nature and floriferous display, starting its bloom just as the summer color begins to wane. This wild sunflower variety is a splendid choice for extending the blooming season into the late summer and early fall, ensuring that your garden remains vibrant as the season transitions.

Ideal for creating an impact with cut flowers or adding a mass of color to the back of a border, the Prairie Sunflower is among the most prolific sources of late-season color. Its tall, vigorous growth ensures the garden border remains lush, bridging the gap during the "in-between" season. With its ability to adapt to various soil types and hardiness across Zones 4 to 9 in North America, the wild sunflowers variety, Helianthus annuus, is a must-have for every garden enthusiast looking to grow sunflowers with ease and splendor.

For optimal growth, direct sow Prairie Sunflower seeds in any sunny location. This hardy variety is not particular about soil conditions, making it a versatile choice for gardeners across North America. Whether planted against an outdoor structure or used to enhance the perennial border, the Prairie Sunflower, with its Helianthus annuus lineage, is a testament to the enduring beauty and resilience of common sunflowers.

This is one of my favorites! Comes back reliably in 7b for me, thrives in red clay, and shrugs off southern heat and humidity. I have visiting yellow finches ever since planting them. They self seed nicely but don't take over. I found transplanting or dividing clumps in the fall to be the ideal season.

I direct sowed these seeds and did not get a single one. I don't know if sunflowers aren't meant to be grown in my garden or if they didn't get enough sun, as my Sunny Babe ones didn't grow either, but none popped up. I will say that although a lot of the seeds I planted from Park Seed took their time to get to show themselves, I did get some of everything else I planted.

Pine Siskin birds love them 0 people found this helpful

This sunflower does well in Colorado. I have grown this from seed, and after 4 years it is well established. I have used a 3 ft. tomato cage to guide it's growth to keeping the 7 ft plant from flopping over. Does well in hot, dry s.w. exposure. Blooms in late July through August, which for me is better than late fall, when heavy snow and cold could wipe out the effort. Birds start feeding on seeds as soon as they are ready, and I enjoy the acrobatic feeding of the thin stems.

Paid for 50 seeds. Counted them. Received far less. Please be super careful with this company. Outside of this site reviews are not the best. Some call it a scam.

Beautiful every year 0 people found this helpful

I have had these sun flowers from seed I bought from you growing for over 25 years. They are consistently the most trouble free and beautiful, with a large showing of flowers, variety I have ever had. They are very easy to relocate in their dormant stage (Dec.-Feb.) and can be shared with friends and family.

These seeds germinate well and the sunflowers grow really tall. Bees love them and they are really nice to look at.

Not sure I received the right seed; bloomed at the wrong time, not the same height, looked much different than picture, disappointing

Put these in quite late but by mid August they're 4 feet tall and have multiple blooms on each plant. Put them on the slope of a drainage ditch in clay soil and they seem to love it. Can't wait until they spread next year.

Planted last year. Good growth-no flowers. Cut down in Fall. This year 6' tall and 5-6 flowers per branch starting in mid July. Looks great!

Vigorous=Invasive 0 people found this helpful

I LOVED them (at first)! They do grow very tall & showy, but quickly spread by seeds and roots. Very difficult to keep in control. If you do grow them, they will branch more fully if you pinch the tops off at about 6 inches - and again as they grow.
