Description / Lycoris aurea Yellow Spider Lily Bulbs
Plant Lycoris aurea Yellow Spider Lily bulbs in the fall before the first frost, and for a spectacular bloom late the next summer, just as many other plants are beginning to go dormant. This highly sought-after, collectors' variety is a larger and more robust version of its red cousin, with bigger flowers, leaves, and bulbs. The clusters of golden-orange flowers, reminiscent of azaleas, sit on sturdy, leafless stems that rise 18 to 24 inches tall. The frilly, fragrant blooms are not only stunning in the garden but also are coveted cut flowers for late summer bouquets and floral arrangements. When left in the garden, these heirloom flowers provide essential sustenance for pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds.
This Lycoris aurea species, commonly known by a variety of names including spider lily, golden spider lily, magic lily, and September lily, is a long-lived bulbous perennial with an upright growth habit. Once planted, yellow spider lily bulbs prefer not to be disturbed, making them better suited for garden beds and borders rather than containers, unless grown as annuals. Clustering them in garden beds creates a stunning display of golden blooms that brighten up the late summer garden.
For best results, plant yellow spider lily bulbs 8 inches apart and 4 to 6 inches deep. Choose a sunny spot that will allow these bulbs to thrive; although, some shade can help prolong the blooming period. During the growth cycle, water the bulbs frequently, but allow them to dry out during the dormancy period in summer. Mulch lightly over winter, particularly in northern areas, to protect the bulbs from extreme cold. As growth begins to appear in the spring, feed the bulbs with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food. Once established, yellow spider lilies are drought-tolerant and require minimal care, for a carefree garden. These plants are also naturally resistant to deer and rodents, boosting their longevity and ensuring beauty in your landscape.
