Purple Zebra, an F1 hybrid cherry tomato, is a fruit vegetable. The plant sets small "perfect" flowers followed by 3- to 4-ounce round fruits with thin skin and a moderately firm texture. Beautiful inside and out, the dark red fruit has green stripes and a deep mahogany interior. The color is bright and clear, making a beautiful plate presentation. The flavor is a rich, unique, complex blend of acidic and sweet, leaning sweet. Tomatoes are considered a superfood for their nutrient-rich content and micronutrient-per-calorie density. Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin C and provide vitamin A and potassium. They also contain carotenoid lycopene, beta-carotene, phenolic acids, and flavonoids.

Usually grown as an annual, Purple Zebra, an herbaceous tender perennial, is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which contains plants that typically grow in temperate to tropical regions. A vigorous, multi-cluster, indeterminate variety, often called a "vining" tomato, Purple Zebra requires staking or caging for support. Blossoms and fruit continue to develop as the vine grows, so, it bears an impressive amount fruit over the course of a season, typically 150 to 200 cherry tomatoes per plant. This variety is a good option for a farmers market crop.

Purple Zebra grows best in full sun and moist, humusy, deep, fertile loams. It has high disease resistance to tomato mosaic virus ToMV, verticillium wilt Va/Vd, fusarium wilt Race 1, leaf mold A-E, late blight PH2/PH3, and intermediate resistance to tomato yellow leaf curl virus TYLCV and tomato spotted wilt virus TSWV.

A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, tomato seed should be direct sown into warm spring soil after all threat of frost has passed. Seeds can also be started indoors about 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting to the garden. Flowers begin to set fruit with night temperatures between 55 and 75°F. Protect plants with row covers if temperatures are expected to dip below 50°F. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature and to maintain soil moisture.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

This is my first season growing Purple Zebra and just today, 8.20.24, I picked my first seven. WOW! 2024. is my first season growing this....sad that i waited so long to try it! My favorite medium size tomato has been Sunchocola but Purple Zebra is its equal. Meaty, sweet and tremendous flavor. I live near Portland, Oregon and have a short season. The tomatoes were started in late February, planted in early May and I stopped watering them in mid July. Next season will bring at least two of these..... maybe more.

We purchased back in February for seed starting and none of our seeds from our packet germinated. We did have great success with all other seeds we planted so possibly we recieved duds. There were only 5 seeds to try but I was hopeful! I’m giving a 2 star because other seeds we purchased did germinate however I was so looking forward to these and they never sprouted.

GREAT crop and hardly plant 0 people found this helpful

I love this tomato.. I chose it because I live in the shadow of the Cascade mountains in Washington state..We have a huge problem with early and late blight here. The ag schools here even teach about our area and the blight problems. Anyhow..I know black krim is very hardy and the green zebra is very very delicious..So a cross from these 2 is just genius..THERE it is..I didn’t have any problem from blight..I got a big plant ..already over 5 feet tall and loaded with the most beautiful looking and delicious tomatoes..They are meaty..easy to skin and easy to seed..Due to medical problems I can’t have either and this tomato works great..The flesh inside is delicious and very meaty and abundant..I will grow this tomato every year form now on..I have loads and load of the tomatoes still coming on and it is late September..I have even had a frost in my area and the plant is still producing..HOPE they grow as good for you!

Rather small, but makes up for the size with its taste. One of the best small tomatoes I have grown.. Beautiful in salads or sliced on a plate. Mixed with other varieties make a great presentation on the dinner tablle.
