Rich, complex flavor and strong aroma.

Savor the taste of real old-fashioned tomato richness, the kind you can smell before you even bite into it! San Marzano organic captures that bygone flavor and aroma in every large, plump, delicious 4½- to 5-ounce plum tomato.

Perfect for saucing, this classic Italian variety is juicy yet meaty. The flavor is complex, and you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy it, because this tomato arises freely on very vigorous plants that continue setting fruit all summer.

Very easy to grow, San Marzano stands up to Fusarium wilt, nematodes, tobacco mosaic virus, and verticillium wilt. You will find it a trouble free pleasure in the garden.

Start seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant outdoors when danger of frost is past and night temperatures consistently remain above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If an unexpected late frost is forecasted, protect young plants with plastic sheeting or other cover, or bring containers to a frost-free location. Set plants 6 inches apart.

Tried all varieties, this is, my opinion of course, the best all round for any type of sauce or salad tomato. Don't plant late!

believe we stuck transplants in the ground early June. Fruit didn't start turning red till early October. Brought them inside and they turned red in there on good time. Very meaty, few seeds, excellent sauce. Many compliments!!

This is the first year I have grown these. I would plant further than 6" apart. They are very prolific and super tomatoes to make sauce from! I will be growing these from now on!!

great sauce tomato 4 people found this helpful

Not for you if you want a salad or slicer tomato, but they make the best sauces! Mine produced heavily, but were susceptible to bottom end rot. A calcium supplement product took care of it. When I set out one of my baby plants, it broke off. That didn't matter. I planted it deeply and it grew like nothing bad ever happened. lI will definitely plant againext year.

poor fruit 2 people found this helpful

First year trying, grew out large, tremendously healthy, pest-free plants that after much anticipation produced unusable crop with blossom end rot, Zone 8

Poor germination 0 people found this helpful

I’m an experienced gardener and grow a lot of tomatoes for my homemade sauce. After 10+ days only a few of the San Marzanos sprouted. I also planted some 5-year-old Amish paste seeds I had and at least half of them sprouted so I know it wasn’t anything I did wrong. Now I’ll have to buy plants if I want San Marzanos - not happy.

Perfect Sauce Tomato 8 people found this helpful

I had good luck with germination of these, even the 2nd year (keep them cool). They are around a 2-3 oz size, elongated, easy to clean, very meaty and perfect for your sauces, marinara, etc. I use them in canning alongside the brandywine tomatoes and I get raves on my sauces. They are a little late in coming out but once they got going, they were consistent.
