Description / Smooth Criminal Squash Seeds

Days to Maturity: 41

This squash plant will steal your heart with its easy-pick plant habit and tasty, tender fruit.

Smooth Criminal has a totally unique, indeterminate growth habit. It continually grows upright, setting more and more fruit along the central stem as it grows. This trait, combined with spineless stems makes it so easy to pick fruit, no more digging into the center of a spiny, scratchy plant and tearing up your arms. It bears very tender, pale yellow, straight-neck squash that are excellent quality and tasty grilled, sautéed and baked.

A growers' favorite in the south, these vigorous bushes bear high-quality fruit across multiple harvests. A great choice for any region of the country, with terrific yields of top-notch eating. It is trouble free and very adaptable, no matter what kind of soil or weather your garden has.

Summer squash ripens during the hot summer months and, thin-skinned, is best eaten fresh. Sow seeds 1 inch deep directly into the garden after the danger of frost is past. Thin the seedlings to 24 inches apart, or plant several seeds in hills 4 feet apart and then thin to 2 plants per hill. (For even earlier harvests, start seeds indoors.) Pick when the fruits are still small (4 to 8 inches long).

Summer hybrid squash 1 people found this helpful

This is one of the easiest plants to grow. You will have to brace the plant with a tomato cage or stakes because it grows upright. The squash that are produced are delicious. I grew about 16 plants and enjoyed around 100 squash. The squash or great for grilling and in any kind of casserole.

Wonderful for smaller gardens 0 people found this helpful

I like that this squash has an upright growth pattern making it a spacesaver. I usually surround with a tomato cage for extra support. The fruits are straight and prolific at about 6-8inches. It has been my go choice for summer squash for some time. Only downside is fighting with squash borders and squash bugs for about 3 weeks when the hot summer days of early August hit. I have limited success after that with keeping the plants healthy.

I have grown these for 2 years in a row now, and am a huge fan!!! They produce so many veggies and are very flavorful. They cook up well - in stir frys, or sliced and oven baked. A real winner, and everyone who gets some loves them!

Great idea 0 people found this helpful

My first time growing squash upright and it seemed like Smooth Criminal was a natural fit. Sadly, it is not. Granted I'm only growing one, but in a bed with 5 other varieties this one is a sad 6th place. The plant is small, petite leaves for a squash, despite being singled out for special feeding attention. The fruit set is scanty at best, and non existant the rest of the time. The 2 squash I've harvested were shiny and smooth with a delicious buttery taste. I'm always up for experimenting so I'm not sorry, just kind of disappointed.

Unusual little squash 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

What they say about this squash is correct. It grows vertically along a strong central stalk. The squash is very prolific but the squash are roughly the size of a small hot dog. It doesn't require fertilization and it has strong mildew resistance. It's common for me to get at least 3 to 4 squash from this plant every four days. The quantity of squash makes up for the size loss. if you like to eat the flowers and squash this would be a good choice. The flowers are huge. The squash is picked after blooming and when it is still a bright yellow coloration. It won't grow much after that point and then turns a deeper yellow. I would buy this squash again because it is very prolific and two to three plants will keep you fed well. Delicious with butter!

Prolific female flowers, but no male flowers, so no pollination 2 people found this helpful

    Rating

Growing this for the first time. It is very healthy and has many female flowers with small yellow squash attached that rot at three inches because there are no male flowers for pollination. I have lots of pollinators and also can hand pollinate but there are no male flowers. I am very frustrated. Great soil, everything else in the garden is doing well but no male flowers. I have never had this on a summer squash before. I would have tons of squash if they could be pollinated
