Description / Tepin Pepper Seeds

Days to Maturity: 180 to 200 from transplant

Though this pepper is entirely edible, its well-branched little bushy plant is so attractive and heavy-yielding that many folks grow it as an ornamental and let the birds have the tiny, incredibly hot peppers (they don't taste the heat, and absolutely love these little round fruits). But if you're ambitious, consider putting just a silver or a pinch, if dried, into a dish one night. You will definitely know it's there.

Tepin sets ¼- to ½-inch diameter peppers that gradually mature from green to red. If you want to harvest them all, go ahead and pick them green, or the birds may beat you to the lion's share. Many experts believe that this is the original Native American wild chile from which all others descend, and given the vigor of this plant, it certainly seems likely. The species is known by many common names, including bird pepper, pequin or piquin, and (our favorite) chile mosquito.

Tepin peppers measure between 50,000 and 100,000 on the Scoville heat index, which is essentially off-the-charts hot. (Jalapeño is only about 5,000 Scovilles, by comparison.) The heat is interesting, though—the first bite is unbelievably spicy for a few minutes, then recedes a bit—setting it apart from the super-hot peppers such as habanero.

Compact enough for containers, and an excellent addition to the rose or vegetable garden (it keeps many pests away from tender plants), Tepin is just too fascinating not to try.

Hot but late 0 people found this helpful

I have grown these two years now. I found these are super spicy at first bite, but do not continue to burn my mouth afterwards. It is a nice combination. My experience: 1) the heat develops as they turn red, so I do not harvest them when green, 2) the birds find them when they are red, so I need to get there first, and 3) in Virginia zone 7, nearly full sun, they are available to harvest starting in mid-September, so I eat a few fresh and the rest are dried for fall and winter use.

A Texas perennial, but not for zero F 0 people found this helpful

I've had several plants growing for over 20 years, but the Feb 2021 0degF Texas freeze killed them, so I'm starting new ones from seed. Just cut them back to about 8 inches every winter, and they'll come back. I keep a jar with vinegar and salt and pop them in for winter cooking, but bite one and you'll feel about 100,000 Scovilles.

Success! 0 people found this helpful

I have enjoyed this pepper in Texas for over 60 years. The Mocking birds did the sowing along the fence lines. I decided to share them by giving plants to family and friends. I planted 2 packets of seeds and only have 9 seeds to germinate. A lot of patience and care is required but worth it. Good luck.

Have not germinated 0 people found this helpful

I have purchase a packet of these seeds in the past and the failed to germinate. This year I decided to purchase again and used a heat mat and the paper towel method to try and germinate. After 30 days they have failed as well. So I bought multiple packs to try and see if they germinate in different mediums and will update with my results. So far these get 1 star from me.
