Description / Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia Seeds

All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2010

Here it is, the bedding zinnia of our dreams. The Zahara series introduced in 2009 immediately became famous for its resistance to mildew and leaf spot, its nonstop blooms, and its larger flower size. Now the best color, Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia, has won All-America Selections award.

Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia blooms are fully 2½ inches wide, and there's more of them—they pop up all over super compact plants, drawing bees and butterflies into the garden and absolutely wowing those hot, dry beds and water-starved containers. Single-flowered, they offer pure white petals with a hot-rose halo at the center. And as the summer sun warms them each day, the rosy shade grows deeper and more intense.

Renowned for its ability to withstand heat, humidity, drought, and just about anything else, Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia is the first bicolor bedding zinnia that can truly claim to be disease resistant. Mildew is a traditional enemy of the zinnia, but Zahara's got it licked. (Or should we say "dried".) Luckily, it's also very long-blooming, prepared to continue well into autumn as long as the hot weather holds. What a joy.

Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia is the annual you'll want along that baking-hot driveway or cement path, crowding against the house (whose walls reflect heat), and beautifying the patio (which never gets watered often enough). Just 12 to 18 inches high and wide, it can be planted a bit more closely than other bedding zinnias, again thanks to the mildew resistance. No need to worry about the foliage "touching".

Direct sow the Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia Seeds when the soil has already warmed and spring is well underway. This plant will flower within 5 to 6 weeks of sowing. But if you want to get an earlier start, or if that hot April turns into a chilly May, no fear—Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia will grow vigorously all the same, and simply wait for the warm weather before blooming. Why can't all plants be this cooperative?

Zahara® Starlight Rose Zinnia was awarded an All-America Selections for garden-worthiness, and you will soon see why. Ease of growth and minimal care are key to the AAS judges, so you can always rely on an AAS winner to outperform most others, and with little effort on your part.

Beautiful, but short (which I loved about them) 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I tried just a few for a perennial border, I want something short and not fussy about care or water. These turned out to be perfect because they only grew 7" tall for me (so far at least at the end of July). Excellent germination, I have the darker star pattern on them all, it does seem somewhat variable though between just thinner markings or the full wide markings. Is it my soil possibly that keeps them this short?

Disappointed 0 people found this helpful

All seeds germinated but all flowers are white with the exception of one single bloom with a tiny bit of pink. Looks nothing like picture.

Huge Disappointment 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

I bought these seeds for my 82 y/o mother because she seen the photograph in the catalog and loved it. It was the only seeds ordered, the packet came swiftly, I planted each seed in it's own cubicle and every seed germinated. They seedling reached blooming size and there was the disappointment, they are plain white. Not a plash of pink at all. I thought then that perhaps she would get a portion as described but nope. I used the contact form about two weeks ago to request a replacement from a different lot number than the one on the seed packet but no response as yet and I imagine during the summer they have a reduced staff but I was irritated to get an sales email promoting this seed today. Mom always says if you are going to give a complaint you have to say something nice: the Park's Wopper seeds performed fantastically and the tomatoes are delish!

Pretty, but markings are not as distinctive as photos 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These germinated fairly well, look healthy and produce a lot of blooms, but they are mostly white, The pink center is certainly not as distinct as the photos, and has faded even more as the temperatures have risen.

Stands up to heat 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These were very heat tolerant and showy. The pink center did not show up until cooler fall temperatures. They were very slow starting and too large and leggy for my large containers. They made a beautiful long lasting low border in the landscape.

Easy care 0 people found this helpful

Disappointed that the color of mine are just white. Noticed others have the same issue. Perhaps something with the soil? Regardless, they are pretty and require very little attention.

I have several good healthy plants, but like another reviewer mine have been only white and have not shown any of the coloring I bought these for.

Quick to sprout 0 people found this helpful

I used a heating pad and the seeds sprouted in about 5 days. Ninety five percent of the seeds sprouted. They came up as strong seedlings. They are still in the seedling stage but I have high hopes for them.

Thrilled with these beauties. 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

First time with growing these beauties, absolutely thrilled. Mine grew to about a foot tall, the color was cream to yellow with the red. Still enjoying them at the end of Sept. These plants are easy to grow and doesn't require much attention. Will be a plus in my garden next year as well.

Where Is the Beautiful Center? 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These zinnias germinated well. I would suggest direct-plant instead of starting before season. Prone to easy wilting. The most obvious problem is no center color. As the reviewer from WA noted, 99+% of blooms were white, only two flowers out of the entire seed pack had the colored center. Also, some plants stayed compact, but a few grew almost twice as a tall with no difference in care. Regardless, a fun experiment to observe! I do love your company!

very little red 0 people found this helpful

I was very disappointed in the bi- color. I could barely see the red on most of my plants. I ended up basically with white zinnias. Will not grow again.

Lovely display and easy to grow 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

It is my first year growing flowers from seeds and I can say that Zinnia Zahara Starlight Rose is very encouraging. The seeds germinate in 3-5 days, considerably quick. Almost all seeds germinated but some died later on - not sure why, but I blamed it on my limited knowledge on taking care of seedlings. Anyway, 70% of the started seeds was survived and get transplanted by the end of May into my front house garden bed, south east of the house, full sun. It filled up the space slowly during its first 2 weeks of transplant, but the growth sped up in July. First bloom was in mid June and the flowers didn't fade until a month or even longer. There are still new blooms coming up early August. Because they grew vigorously, the faded flowers were hidden under the newer ones, no one would notice it. It is definitely recommended for beginner gardener!

seems germinated readily but the little 2 inch plants are not growing or developing secondary leaves. It has been 3 weeks.

Perfect for sunny border 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Planted along the edge of a patio that gets 8 or 9 hours of sun with reflected heat from bluestone and a nearby asphalt.driveway. I tried to water regularly during dry spells in Upstate NY but even when I missed they thrived and grew bushier. Only drawback was that by the end of the season the blooms grew so heavy that they were leaning over, but that was only in the last few weeks of the season.

What a performance! 0 people found this helpful

I have a new favorite! These cheerful blooms are still a standout in August. Germination rate was nearly 100 percent and they are perfect flying solo in containers or complimenting almost anything. Great cut flower. Love them.

Perform well in heat, but only bloomed white, no pink markings 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These zinnias bloom well in the heat, like any other zinnia. Unfortunately, they were lacking the pink markings and what few flowers did have the pink marking, it was very small and insignificant, nothing like the picture.

I've used this one for years along my sidewalk and driveway because it's one of the few that can really take the heat and the deer do not touch it. It's beautiful and drought tolerant and so easy to grow

I was very pleasantly surprised how well these zinnias performed in our hot/dry garden last year. Once established, they were prolific and hardy. They were one of the best flowering performers in our garden.I will try these again this year.

No problem with germination, but very slow growth at seedling stage. Grew well after transplanting. Just plain white Zinnia with litter pink markings. Nothing outstanding.
