Winter Squash Seeds

What is it about winter squash that elicits the feeling of home and comfort? Maybe it’s the savory dishes we create with them— hearty stews, rich side dishes. Or maybe it’s the timing of the fall harvest and our enthusiasm to use these delicious vegetables as the temperatures outside cool.

The Taste of Fall from Your Garden

Plant winter squash seeds as you do for summer squash, after the threat of frost has passed. Due to their abundant and hearty harvest, winter squash can sometimes need support to hold up its bounty. Squash is one of the Three Sisters plants along with beans and corn. Squash works as a groundcover in the traditionally Native American trio and works to prevent weeds. If you have a shorter growing season, start winter squash seeds indoors using the Bio Dome indoor seed starting system. Squash is sensitive to cold so when direct sowing, wait until soil temperatures have warmed.

While the thinner skins of summer squash are edible, the tough outer shell of winter squash makes them ideal for storing. Those shells also make a great bowl for serving up your delicious recipes. Often the seeds of winter squash can be roasted, as you would for pumpkin seeds, for a savory snack. Winter squash has dense flesh that makes it a good option for steaming and cubing for a nutritious add-in for stews and casseroles. The flesh is also delicious mashed with your favorite spices added. Whatever the reason, your backyard garden is complete with the addition of winter squash. Grow winter squash to extend your enjoyment of your backyard garden bounty when you properly store it for fall and winter.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
