South Dakota Planting Zones & Schedule

South Dakota’s USDA growing zones range from Zone 4a to Zone 5b, depending on where you are in the state. The southern part of the state is a little warmer than the north, with the shortest growing season being in the higher elevation areas around Buffalo and Aberdeen.

Because of the short growing season and cool climate, South Dakota is best suited to cold-hardy crops like root vegetables and cool-season vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and kale.

  • *Keep in mind that frost can occur before or after these dates. Watch your local weather to determine the best time to plant.
