Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit

An all-around superior performer, Algarve, an Italian Romano Pole bean, sets plentiful pea-shaped white flowers in spring, followed by masses of very uniform, straight, thin, mid-green pods that reach up to 11 inches long and 1 inch wide. They have a tender bite with phenomenal, award-winning flavor. Completely stringless, the attractive pods look as good as they taste.

Typically grown as an annual, this herbaceous short-lived perennial (Zones 7-11) has a short growing season and performs in many different climates. Algarve is a vigorous, robust indeterminate variety, growing vertically as a graceful flowering vine that requires support, such as our bean growing tower or natural bamboo ring set, creating height and dimension in the garden. The vine may also be allowed to trail along the ground. Although the plant maintains a small footprint, it produces high yields for about a month. The beans are easy to harvest and earlier than most. Promptly picking the beans before the seeds mature keeps the beans coming.

A shallow-rooted plant, Algarve grows best in a sunny location with moist, fertile, organically rich, well-drained loams. It is resistant to common bean mosaic virus. Self-pollinating, it will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.

A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it is best direct-sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed. Succession plant every two weeks until about mid-August to ensure a continual harvest.

Algarve Italian Romano Pole bean seeds can also be started indoors and planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

Wonderful tasting bean 1 people found this helpful

The crop failed with a bean I had used for years, so I picked this variety "Algarve". I have not been disappointed. The taste is superb, just like the beans my grandmother raised. I have canned 98 quarts from two rows about 15 feet long. I started picking them in June and they are still bearing in September!! The beans are long and tender and snap easily. No strings!! Highly recommend.

Japanese Beetles 1 people found this helpful

For the second year in a row, I find this variety was spared being devoured by Japanese Beetles. The pole bean (Fortex) next to it is almost completely nude thanks to those evil bugs. I have grown these for several years because of the wonderful flavor. By far the best flavor I have ever tasted in a climbing bean.

Please correct your review stating that this is a French climbing pole bean. This is actually a Portuguese variety. Actually Algarve is a region in southern Portugal. This bean is actually called Vargem (bean) Manteiga meaning butter. I love this bean you offer and been ordering since you have offered it. Excellent, not being critical just making an observation. Thank you best wishes!

Portuguese Pole Beans 'fantastic' 1 people found this helpful

Hello, I have purchased these pole beans "Algarve" from Parks seeds since they have been offered. And I have to say they are the best long flat pole beans by far I've ever planted. I am from Portugal where these beans originate from, every family pretty much grows these in there gardens, as they are used as side dish cooked, soups, and stews. They are called other names such as "feijao de menteiga, Gloria, or Trespesar. I have grown them all and have to say the Park Seed Algarve strain is wonderful and lives up to exact same characteristics. Very productive, stays tender on the vine and puts out bushels and bushels of beans. Very Highly recommended!!!!

These beans have been incredible. Well worth the price. Also, the seeds can be saved and planted the next year- I have done that 2 years now. They are super productive and a sunny wall of them about 8ft long and 8ft high produced enough for both fresh eating and also freezing for winter.

I have grown pole beans for over 40 years. Always blue lake and Kentucky wonder. I tried these on a whim and was completely astonished at both the high yield and the quality of flavor. This will be in the garden from now on. Excellent as a freezer as well as a canner.

Awesome Beans 2 people found this helpful

Wow, are these beans good! I ordered them last year just because the variety I wanted wasn't available. Happy accident, because they produced like crazy and were absolutely delectable! My twelve-year-old son inhaled them for weeks on end. Plus they took a long time to get seedy, when meant when I was a little late going out to pick them, they were still in very good shape. They grew enormously long and I put them in a lot of recipes! BTW, I almost never write reviews as I am pretty busy, but this one was worth the time!

These beans were excellent and a good producer. It took a while for them to start blooming in the Pacific Northwest, but once they started to produce beans, the plants did so until after the first frost. Excellent flavor as well.

I sowed may 23, which may have been a smidge early, and July 26 we are eating our first side of green beans at dinner. They grew so vigorously! We have had some issue with something (bunnies?) Eating the vines about 3 inches above the ground, which unfortunately took out about a third of the plants, but the remaining plants are producing furiously! Will definitely replant next year!

So easy to grow, heavy producer, and the flavor is delicious, even kids, who don’t like beans gobble them up. They freeze well and keep their flavor throughout the winter. If they grow too large shell and dry, use as you would any white bean. I’m never going to grow another variety.

Best Bean Ever! 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

I have grown Algarve every year since finding it at Park Seed about 8 years ago. I try a different variety along with Algarve each year, but none has equalled in taste, earliness, yield, and over-all quality. The larger ones, I slice, or French, and stay completely stringless. They yield until frost, if kept picked, through the season. My all time favorite green bean!

Pick them early for best flavor 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These are awesome beans. Quick to produce vs. other string beans. They taste best if picked when they are 1/2" to 3/4" wide and 8" to 10" long. The 1"x 12" and larger beans are not as tasty. Search for Green Beans Gremolata recipes. Best if blanched 4 minutes in salted water before frying. This is the second year I have grown these beans. I will plant them again next year.

What a surprise! 1 people found this helpful

Ordered and planted these on a whim in 2015. A 12ft row supplied me and two neighbors with beans all summer. I also froze 5 gallons for winter eating. They were the best tasting I have eaten in ages and 100% stringless. Just wonderful. Tried to grow them last year but weather didn't cooperate. Almost all of my summer garden failed because of cold wet weather. This year they are on my list of must haves (weather permitting).

Wonderful 0 people found this helpful

A gardener for over 30 years, I bought this to try something new. I now have the best tasting, largest, most tender beans I have ever had. A good producer so far, have only about 15 plants, have picked two 5-gallon buckets about half full, with many, many more still very small and the plants still flowering. I would say not quite as many beans, but they are much larger than your average bean. I do not have to give them away; neighbors are coming over to ??help me pick them?g. I am going to try other similar beans next year; this one just blew me away.

Their rep recommended Algarve beans as a substitute for the unavailable Early Riser pole beans that I like. The Algarve beans are as sweet, tender, tasty, prolific and early as the Early Risers. Thanks for the recommendation.
